QOTD 11/18

Have you ever just applied for a job and didn't expect to get it but ended up with an offer? Did you take it?

Re: QOTD 11/18

  • Two summers ago I was so desperate to leave my current job that I applied for several jobs. I got one of them, but had to turn it down when they changed the hours that they had initially said I would be working.

  • My current job.  It was a crazy series of events where I went to my CW's house to met her brother, and met her dad in the process.  He found out my major was Math/Stats and asked if I heard of this place.  He said to give him my resume.  I didn't hear back all year (my senior year of college), so I gave her an updated resume.  I did an externship that summer, and 2 days after I moved back home, I got called for an interview.  I had applied the normal way to a few positions, so I didn't even know which job they were calling about.  I went in for an interview and they had my original resume (I brought the updated).  I got a call 6 weeks later, which was a record, that I started that Monday.  I was like WHAT?!

  • My current job. I had just been laid off and was in this panicked state of "apply for all the things". I wasn't even expecting to get interviewed because the job was in adult mental health and I had only ever worked with children and adolescents before. And when they brought me back for a second interview, which was a group interview and absolutely terrifying, I felt grossly underqualified and never thought I'd get an offer. Nevertheless, I got a call about a week later, and since I was unemployed I pretty much had to take it. I started right when my severance pay from my old job ran out. And I only thought I'd stick around until I found something better, but lo and behold I've now been there for four years!

  • Nope.  I've owned my business since I was out of HS, so never really applied anywhere else other than restaurant jobs when I was a younger teenager.

  • I still don't have a real job LOL! Although, this Ph.D. is wrapping up quickly and I'll be applying like crazy soon.

  • My part time job. I applied on a whim for it after getting into a small bicker with DH and got an offer not even a few days later. On an awkward note, the night before I got called, I ran into my sister and she had applied for it as well.

  • I applied for my current job on a whim. I already had a job that wasn't too bad but said hey why not. I got an interview and thought it went okay. I got a call a few days later and was offered the position.

I also got hired on the spot at Victorias Secret as an assistant manager with no retail experience at all.

  • I got my current job without even applying...so I was pretty surprised I got it! haha

I'm a research assistant at a university.  Everyone who applies to the masters' program in my department is technically considered for a research assistantship but I wasn't interested (was only planning on going part time).  I didn't think they would even be looking for one at that time since I started the program in the middle the of year.  But they were and offered it to me - so, now I'm getting a masters' degree for free! couldn't turn it down..
