First u/s tomorrow!

I am so nervous and excited. I have a question for the plus sized mamas out there who had an 8-9 week u/s.

I was told to have a full bladder so I read online that means they will be doing a transabdominal ultrasound. I carry most of my weight/belly fat in the lower abdomen area. I am afraid that this will interfere with the ultrasound. I have read that sometimes this happens with larger mamas and they have to switch to a transvaginal ultrasound. I just don't know if I can handle them having trouble finding baby. I'm not even sure if they have the abilities to do a transvaginal u/s at my OB office (surely they do?). Any wisdom from someone who may have been there before?

I will be sure to post tomorrow evening and let you all know how it goes!

Re: First u/s tomorrow!

  • Ahh I'm sure its going to go wonderfully!! I've only had transvaginal ultrasounds so i'm no help with that, but i'm sure they have that capability at your doctors office.

you're going to love it!! good luck

  • With mine they started with transabdominal. They could see baby. They did move to transvaginal.

Weirdest part, both times transabdonminal was first, then they would have me pee, then do transvaginal. Never fully understood that. And if you get techs like I did, they can push pretty hard that makes you want to pee BADLY!

  • My six week was a transvaginal. They saw what small peanut there was to see just fine. I wouldn't worry too much. I can't imagine your obg doesn't have a transvaginal if they have a trans abdominal machine.

  • I had a 10 week ultrasound at the OB office and it was transvaginal. I can't remember if they told me to fill my bladder or not...

I'll be thinking of you and anxiously awaiting an update! :)

  • I'm not plus sized, but I've had 4 first tri u/s and every one I have had to have a full bladder and they did the transab, then I got to go pee, then they did transvag.  Even if they see a healthy baby they often want to check your cervix length etc and they can most easily do that up the who-ha.  GL tomorrow!

  • My 8 week ones were always t/v. But either way they always made me use the restroom before any type of U/S. It's interesting to see how everyone's instructions are different.

    GL!

  • Thanks for your input. I am just already so nervous, anxious, and excited. I hope everything is going well in there and that seeing baby will put me more at ease. It's a good thing I have a busy day tomorrow so that time will pass quickly!

So exciting!  Can't wait to hear how it goes!!!

FYI - I'm not plus-sized, but I've had to have full bladders for all T/V and for my NT Scan that was T/A at 13w3d.  My a/s at 18w2d, I didn't need a full bladder.

  • Good Luck! I can't wait to hear how it goes!

    My 8 week was a t/v. Didn't have a t/a until my A/S at 20 weeks.

They didn't say anything about my bladder being full for the t/v. Actually I remember peeing before this ultrasound. For the A/S I had to have a full bladder. I guess it helps them see your cervix better. After she got the pics she needed, I was able to use the bathroom and then she got everything else.

  • They look for other things besides the baby, so they could be looking at your ute and ovaries with the abdominal? Then try the transvaginal to see baby. My sonographer printed out pics for the doc of my ute and ovaries.

  • Good luck tomorrow, and let us know how it went!

Mine was like other posters.  They started with t/a then switched to t/v.

  • I only had one t/v and that was my first one around 7 weeks.  All of the rest have just been abdominal and I never had to have a full bladder.  In fact, they always had me pee in a cup right before all of them.

Good luck tomorrow!!  I can't wait to hear how it goes!
