What do you think of this rug?

I am trying to decide if I want to keep this rug, and also what curtains would look good. Please ignore the mess. The fabric sitting on the chair is a curtain that I was trying, but I'm afraid that it won't work with the rug. The curtains up now are a temporary solution. I plan to hang them high and wide and floor length. Let me know what you think! Thank you!

Re: What do you think of this rug?

  • I don't like it.  It looks like an outdoor rug.  But I really like the shape and color of your furniture and the wall color.  It's very monotone, and the bright mantle really stands out. It's a fun room to play with.

  • I like the rug. I think it adds a pop of color to the room. I think the curtains (on the chair) mirror the geometric pattern of the rug and would look great. if you decide not to use that fabric as a curtain, maybe you could make a couple of pillows with it, along with a couple in the same purple color as the rug. And maybe just do a solid color curtain in the same purple or in grey with a purple border.

  • Thanks for the opinions guys! Of course it's split down the middle, which is how I feel, lol. The sofa is actually a small black and cream houndstooth fabric. Any other opinions?

  • I like the rug with the furniture and I think the mixture of the large pattern in it with the teeny pattern of the sofa is intriguing.

I would actually try to do a solid fabric pattern in your drapery panels. If you want to go dramatic, you could do a deeper hue of the rug shade. For a more toned down look, you could do a neutral tan/beige or whatever coordinates with that tan in the rug. Also, you should have the drapery fabric lightly touching the floor - about 1/4" off. And, if you hang the rod so it reaches on the outsides of the window frame you will make it appear that your window is wider and it will fill the space more nicely.

Then, I would echo the pink rug hue in some toss pillows - solid or a splashy floral. I attached two ideas from Target.

Pull some more black in - a framed art piece in a black frame or black toss pillows on the chairs?

Lastly, I have the same coffee table and ADORE it! It is fabulous isn't it!?

  • It is too neutral - everything i the room is neutral.  I would go with more color on the floor
  • The rug is too neutral? It is light purple in real life. Maybe it looks more neutral in the picture.

Purple isn't a neutral color. Being made up of a mixture of red and blue, purple is a secondary color and falls outside the neutral spectrum of colors.  I think it's the picture.

It's possible the PP means that the rug doesn't POP in the space. Maybe another word choice besides "neutral" would be that it doesn't make a statement, it's not vibrant enough in her opinion, or to her eye, it falls flat in line with the other true neutrals in the space (your tans, browns, blacks, whites).

If you like/love the rug - than keep it and pop in more vibrant colors with pillows, drapery and artwork, décor items, and floral arrangements.

Personally, your space is not my style (other than the coffee table), but I do see the good beginnings of a well-designed room. :)

  • Thanks MommyLiberty! I love the coffee table, but I'm actually planning to replace it because it looks so small in our new house. The sofa is 95" long, so I think I need something a little bigger. My style is very mid-century, eclectic. I love colors and patterns, and simple lines for furniture. We are going to hang curtains high and wide, and just above the floor. What's up now are curtains we took from our old house with a simple tension rod. I am looking for deep plum curtains now like you mentioned. What other colors would pop but still coordinate well?

It just depends in which direction you like best for color...you could do more of the varying depths of purple. Pink is also seen a lot with purple, but that might be too girly for you. The opposite color to purple on the color wheel is yellow. You could also do a few surprising pops of yellow - but this should be very limited to a few small uses. (I have edited this, I had written 'orange' before, but then I realized I mistyped).

I think www.hgtv.com has a lot of info on color and color pairing.
