QOTD 11/20

Have you ever "read" a cookbook?
my read shelf:
Cathy (CathyL7910)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

Re: QOTD 11/20

  • Um no, I've searched through for yummy ideas, but know I just pin everything haha.

But my college roomate cooked her way through one.  She started with only having appetizers for dinner, then soups, salads... etc.  I think she had some serious issues.  But the end of the 3 years (it started soph year), she was just eating desserts.

    That sounds awesome.

I've thumbed through them for ideas.

  • I have a cookbook OBSESSION!!! I have between 40-50 cookbooks on a cook case in my kitchen. They are basically just for show. I have made maybe 5 recipes from them :-)
  • No.  We just bought our first cookbook about 2 months ago but have yet to make anything from it.  I always have to buy extra stuff that I don't normally use for recipes and the remainder goes bad, so we just stick to our normal meals so we don't waste food.

  • YES!  I've cooked my way through many of them.  We're big on cooking and I make everything from scratch.  My goal is to work my way through my Julia Childs books...

  • Julia Child's is actually hysterical. I have not read it all the way through, but whenever I cook something from it, I read the whole section. Breads were especially entertaining.

HA! I didn't read this before my post!

  • ALL.THE.TIME! I love reading cookbooks, especially the commentary at the beginning of a recipe.

And yes, Julia Child is hysterical! I love the paragraph in her cookbook that says to keep your non-stick cookware away from kooks and non-chefs! That cracked me up! I have 1 non-stick pan (I only use non-stick for eggs and other sticky situations) and it came with a drawstring bag to store it in...I call it the kook shield LOL!

  • I've never read my way through the comments, I just use them as a reference.  I buy a cookbook and then have DH flag all the recipes he's willing to try with post-its.  He's a super picky and ridiculous eater.  The post-its have notes like, "I'd try this with no mushrooms," or "I hate tomato chunks."  I never get to cook anything exactly as it is in a book...
  • Never the whole thing but we use them often.

  • Never read through a cookbook, but I feel I must now try to cook my way through Julia Child!  I absolutely love to cook.  I use cookbooks and pinterest for ideas, but I always end up not actually following the recipe and modifying it.  Because of this... DH is actually making me write down my version of the recipes to make our own cookbook.  He gets super aggravated when he likes something and I don't always remember exactly what all I did.  I can usually get it close by reviewing the recipe I started out with and trying to remember though.  LOL!

  • I rarely follow a recipe exactly either...except for baking, baking is an exact science LOL.

I use cook books for inspiration, but usually end up doing my own thing. It drives DH crazy that I rarely measure anything. I tell him that I just "know" how much I use LOL. I've actually started to take iPhone pics when I make a new recipe, it's easier for me than writing it down. At least I can look back at the pic and figure out what I did.

  • For all you that don't measure I have a funny post for you.  My sister asked my mom for her stuffing recipe and my mom said to add sage until it looked good.  My sister then asked "What's until it looks good."  And this was my mom's response:

So you can see sage on the bread, but not so much that the bread is green. If you pick up some bread and taste it, you should be able to lightly taste the sage, but not burn your throat with it. I grab it (the sage) and shake a little on after every 5 or so pieces of bread. Just enough to put some green on that layer.

When I asked for her potato salad recipe she told me to mix it until it was the same yellow as the walls in her kitchen.  I can never mimic any of her recipes because she measures absolutely nothing!

This is how all of my family's recipes are!

Bahaha - this reminds me of a story too!  My roomate in college had a Friendsgiving type dinner for us one night, a year or two after we graduated.  She used her grandmother's stuffing recipe.  It was all measured in teacups.  Well, friend used her coffee mug... we had SO MUCH STUFFING!  It was delicious though!!!!

  • I've never read one cover to cover.  I have scanned through to find a recipe though.  I'm like a few PPs and I will modify most recipes.  I am an incredibly picky eater.  My H will eat anything, go figure.
  • That's how my mom cooks (and bakes). It drives me crazy, but I do the same thing (and DH hates it). I like trying recipes but I don't do it as often as I could.
