Sensory Bins? Has Anyone Done This?

I was scrolling FB last night and a friend had posted about a sensory bin she made for her son who is a few weeks older than G. Have any of you done this? I had always, incorrectly, assumed that these were strictly therapeutic activities for little ones dealing with sensory issues, but that seems not to be the case.

Also, am I just setting myself up for ANOTHER thing to worry about?

Re: Sensory Bins? Has Anyone Done This?

  • We haven't done it, but they do them at Liam's school....I figure I'll let them be the ones to deal with the mess :)  The kids seem to love it though!

  • Right, Emmy? G is in an in-home situation which is a little less structured in that way. I wonder if I made a bin or two and took it over to her she would be accepting. Hmmm...

  • I struggle with letting my kids use playdough, I don't think my heart could handle some of those bins.

  • Yeah, there's a definite mess factor associated, for sure. I have a weird hatred for ANYTHING getting under my fingernails (which is why I don't eat wings) - so I don't know if *I* could handle a sensory bin :)

  • We never used them. They have them at day are and they are a mess! If you want rice, beans, etc all through your house, go for it! Then trying to eat everything!!! Aye Yai Yai!

If we want to do senses, I'll grab a few things like a Rock, soft blanket, jeans, sandpaper and talk about senses or we'll have a fingerpaint/playdoh play night

  • Ask the daycare person before you make them...she might not want to say no if you already made it and if its In-home, she may not want more mess or choking or spread infection bc every kid would want to play with it risk

  • Yeah, as I said, I wondered if she would be accepting. I would never just show up on her doorstep with a bunch of messy stuff without asking first.
