Distressed color

I'm making a growth chart like the ones below. What do you think is the best way to go about having it look aged and distressed. Should I paint it and then distress, or stain the wood and then paint? I wasn't planning on using a 2x4 so I'm not sure that the wood will have nice grain like the ones below. Any ideas?

Re: Distressed color

  • Whether or not you stain it, all depends on how you want it to look.  Some people use stains, or you can use one coat of paint for your base, a different color for your main color, and then sand down around the edges so your base paint shows through.

Here are far better instructions:  http://www.hgtv.com/handmade/how-to-distress-furniture-/index.html

In the photo you provided, the painted boards don't look very distressed.  It looks more like they put on a thin coat of paint, so the wood still shows through a little.  It's possible that they did sand the paint down a little, but normally when I see things that are distressed, the wood (or the base color) shows through primarily on the edges.
