Knowledge is Power (PR - Not me)

Not sure if some of you remember, but I had posted about 6 months ago about my friend who was TTC for quite some time with no success.  She went to the Dr to get some questions answered, and they pretty much told her nothing was wrong (after doing testing).  Since our area isn't much about fertility assistance or anything, she just put it out to everyone that they found out they couldn't have children.  So I recommended TCOYF to her, and about temping and charting.

Well she sent me a text today that they are expecting!  She said that book was amazing, and after temping she had learned that she O'd on CD20 not CD14 like she was told to try around.  They weren't for any treatment or assistance anyways, but this is something she was in control of and is "natural."  I can't help but be so excited for her and her H.  They were able to conceive naturally, which is what they wanted from the start.

So I want to reiterate that this board is amazing!  You girls have not only helped me through my journey, but in being on here I have learned a lot and have been able to give guidance and support to people IRL that have/are struggling through TTC. If it wasn't for this board I wouldn't know/understand the importance of temping and charting, and wouldn't have been able to share that with them.

  • I'm so glad you were able to help your friend! I can't imagine the joy they felt after thinking they wouldn't be able to conceive. I also had a friend who got PG after I let her borrow TCOYF (her husband was the one who read it, actually!), and they had been trying for over a year with bad timing (too late in her cycle).

  • its crazy to me that people don't know about the basics! I'm so happy you were able to suggest this book to your friends.

My husband told me the other day he was talking with a friend of his, he and his wife just married in late August, and this friend told my H that they were having trouble getting pregnant. first I flipped because it annoys me that they've been trying for 2 maybe 3 cycles and consider that having trouble. but then I told my H to bring them my copy of TCOYF!

the information is out there, people need to know about it!

  • That's so awesome that you were able to help your friend!!!

I seriously cannot believe a doctor would tell someone "nothing is wrong; you just can't get pregnant!" Especially without knowing (or making sure she knew) how her cycles worked.  Happy it worked out for the best, but irritated at how many people, especially doctors, just don't get it.

  • It irks me to no end that doctors who have gone away from these small-town areas and studied medicine can return and just have such a blah view of people's health concerns. It's like, did you go learn anything at all?! Or because you're practicing in rural America you think doing anything investigative is stupid? Ugh.

SO glad your friend had you to help her see the light!! It boggles my mind that so many women still have no idea about their bodies, and just take the "average" information we're all taught as law. One couldn't possibly ovulate later than CD 14! No, never! :P

  • Congrats to your friend! Kudos to you for sharing TCOYF. I had a friend lend it to me and was shocked at how much I didn't know! I'm a late ovulator (CD19/20) and wouldn't have known if it wasn't for that book.

  • The use of the word natural in this post irks me.

    That is all.

"I DO NOT love that you think so many things revolve around you.  I know you're bitter.  I get it.  But I'm over your feelings." The best person on the internet ever!
  • @seahorse01 It's sad to say, but telling anyone that you had "assistance" to conceive around here is like telling them you don't believe in God. So many people try for 1+ years, see an OB/GYN, get told nothing is wrong, and they give up because the community doesn't accept medical assistance well.

Even when I mentioned to family members that I temped and charted they side eyed me and said we weren't letting nature take its course. So "naturally" conceiving is considered the ONLY way to conceive to them. Which is why these friends wouldn't seek out any medical assistance, and just told people they couldn't get pregnant.

Small towns have its perks, but there's also a lot of downfalls too.  Why else do you think we drive over an hour away to an OB that offers IF assistance, and the nearest RE is 2 hours away.

  • That's really awesome! Congrats to her!

I am sad though that your town isn't more supportive of women who need assistance. It shouldn't matter how a woman gets pregnant.

  • Like others have said I can't believe doctors could tell a women 'nothing is wrong but you can't conceive' unless they have a solid reason. I wish people were more educated and I'm so glad that you were able to help your friend.
