Oh come on, I know all of you do it. Even if your spouses are aware of it. When done correctly, manipulation can be an effective tool when having loving, healthy relationships :p

I'm feeling pretty proud of myself. When we first moved Jared up to Seattle, his job said they will reimburse the $150 a month fee for his car parking spot at his apartment (yes, it costs an extra $150 a month just to have a parking spot...darn downtown Seattle). Jared has been in Seattle since June, so 6 months times $150/month equals $900 we should have in our bank account. Only thing is, November is almost over and Jared hasn't filed the paperwork yet for this reimbursement. So finally last night I told him if he submits the paperwork to get reimbursed before the end of the week, $600 will go towards our Disneyland tickets and the rest of the money will be his Disneyland spending budget.

Lo and behold, I get consistent text updates from Jared today saying he got the receipts from his apartment showing we paid the fee each month, he submitted the paperwork to his work, and got the approval for the reimbursement. Before 10am. Funny how he just needed some sort of incentive to get going. Muahaha.

Some may call it reasoning, but its totally manipulation. And I'm proud of it. We both got what we wanted :)

Anyone else "reason" with their spouses? hehe

Re: Manipulation

  • so very nicely done! haha!

I've done this a few times. Can't think of any examples lol. = )

  • I've done this. I do this a lot actually. Works well for budgeting with video games. The biggest one is, he doesn't want to watch the money. I told him that is fine, but he doesn't get to decide what he spends. He has to approve most of his purchases. So I always know when he gets a new video game.

The last one was, you bring home a walmart gift card when you have a choice of a lowes or a home depot, no games for a month.

  • I just do things and don't tell Joy until it is too late for her to do anything about it.  Not really manipulation, but it works....

****Someone who understands my life! It's not really so much the spending of the money, because he asks for so few video games. The last one he bought was Grand Theft Auto V in September. He doesn't play Call of Duty anymore. And he always "asks"/will say "Hey babe, there's a new game coming out in a few weeks." So I'm able to set aside the money for him. And I don't really care.

Where most of it happens is with the time the  man spends. He either is up incredibly late and sleeps right up until he has to leave for work OR spends all day (and I mean all day) playing them. It's taken a lot of compromise to get him to budget his time. I don't care if he plays, but a little time with me would be nice. So it's always "watch two episodes of this show on Netflix and you can play your games etc."

Oh the life of a gamer wife.

  • ....yeahhhhhhhh T thought he was getting a new laptop this summer and was going to stick me with the old one that doesn't even open word.

I ended up with the new laptop for school = )

but yes, I will take the videogames over some other hobbies that can get expensive.

  • Two years ago, Jared got a new macbook air. He needed a laptop for school (computer science major). Understandable, so we got one on black friday 2012. Last summer, the new MacBook Pro came out. He wanted it and I needed a new computer, so I got his old MacBook Air, he got the new MacBook Pro. A year later... another new MacBook Pro. He asks "Hey, so do you need an upgrade? Like maybe my MacBook Pro?"

No, Jared. You are not getting a new computer again.

  • I can't complain about computers. He built the desktop he has now, and it was almost 2000 when he did, but I don't think he is getting another one anytime soon. All I really have to do now is, it's for the house honey.

The thing he doesn't know is that he is getting an xbox one for christmas, as long as I can get one. Someone asked me what I am going to do if he tries to buy one. My answer was: he won't. He would have to ask me about money before buying it, and I can just tell him we don't have enough.

Oh, and I have to do the time thing too. That is all he would do if he could. Usually it is: you have 10 minutes before we go. Everything else can wait till I go to bed.

  • Lol, yes it is an effective tool and I agree that videogames are a better hobby that others.  It's P's favorite thing to do.  But he likes the ones on the computer.
