Alaska Cruise?

Just throwing this out there:

Anyone here ever been on an Alaska cruise? I am thinking of trying to plan one for our 5-year anniversary next year. It seems fairly affordable and we wouldn't have to fly (which seriously stresses me out).

Also, if you have been on a cruise in general, any recommendations for cruise lines (or ones to avoid)?

ETA: I just realized I spelled Alaska wrong. Head desk. I hadn't had my coffee yet. Thanks for not making fun.

Re: Alaska Cruise?

  • I have not but really want to.

Our best friends went a year ago. They LOVED it! They did 7 days with Royal Caribbean. They did say that they wished they went longer so they could see more/spend more time at each port.

My in-laws want to do a cruise/train combo through Alaska and have only heard good things.

Super jealous if you do it!

  • I went on one when I was 16! It was a 7 day cruise with royal carribean. We stopped at Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau I believe. It was an awesome time, and I would love to do it again sometime.
  • I've done one.  We were in/out of Seattle.  If you want to see more of Alaska, I recommend doing either a northbound (to Anchorage) or southbound (from Anchorage).  I feel like we spent most of our time at sea to get there, which was fine, except that it was cold and rainy the whole time (which sounded unusual according to locals for July).  Regardless of the weather, we had a wonderful time and I got to see glaciers and icebergs.  :)  We went on Royal Caribbean.

I've heard doing the train/cruise combo is awesome!!

  • I went on a cruise to Mexico in 2006 on Carnival. It was a week long and it was awesome.

I do suggest being careful about doing activities while at port if you want to go shopping, they can eat up your time. Also, try to have at least 1 Day at Sea. It was nice to have a day (we actually had 2) to walk around the boat because there is a lot to do on the boat too. I did 2 of the formal dinners and felt that the food wasn't as great as the food on other parts of the boat.

  • My MIL just went this past year.  She loved it and said it was so beautiful.  Just said how beautiful it was and she was surprised she liked it as much as she did.  She is NOT a cold weather fan.  Lol  I have always been curious, and I think my H and I will for sure do one of these later on in our lives.

I also went on a week-long Carnival Cruise to Mexico in 2006!!!!!!!! To Cozumel. Wonder if we were on the same ship? Except (giving away my age here) I was a junior in high school and we went as our senior trip. We had a great time it was just a handful of girls and our moms. Real windy up on top deck because I remember trying to lay out and get some sun and my hair was blowing everywhere. We did a bike ride as our activity and it was pretty strenuous but then we swam in a coldwater spring which was beautiful and refreshing. Also great food the whole time. I wasn't too impressed with the shopping though so I was glad we did the activity.

My DH would LOVE to visit Alaska. He is always watching that "Alaska game warden" show and loves the hunting, the outdoors and cold weather. Maybe for our 5 year anniversary we will do one. Let us know which cruise line you go with and how it goes!!!

We went to Cozmel, Grand Cayman, and two other cities that I don't remember the names. It was the week of Valentines Day. The first port we didn't do an activity, the others we did. One of them was ATVing and it was so awesome to see the island that way.

  • @barrdootbluejean204, my husband wants to move to Canada just for the hunting! Maybe we can all move together so they are happy and we have company! Lol
  • We just did the Alaskian cruise on NCL in September and loved it.  Regardless of cruise line, they all go to the same ports.  There's only so many places you can park a cruise ship. :)

  • I went on an Alaskan cruise in '09 on Princess.

It was fine.  The ports were pretty fun, but I found out that I am just not a cruise person.  I didn't care for the entertainment, food and whatnot.  Everybody else loved it that went with us though.  The weather was pretty nice in May when we went.

  • @blueeyedblossom Nice. Our DH's would probably be friends. He's a HUGE deer hunter and hunts with a bow mostly (I do hunt sometimes, when its not cold or rainy!)

  • We really want to go on an Alaskan cruise in a couple of years, too.

I've been on Cunard (affiliated with Princess now, I think) and Carnival, and I thought Carnival was really hokey. I absolutely loved the Cunard cruise, though.

  • We went on Royal carribean for our honeymoon. I will go back at some point and do the land and sea cruise. If you are at all into grins do the white pass Yukon railroad. I could say so much more but It is past my bedtime.

  • I love cruising! If you plan this trip you should pay for me to go. I would love to visit Alaska and hang out with Josh Harris!

Royal Carribean has amazing customer service and better food and is a better experience than Carnival. Those are the only two lines we've gone on. We are booked with Norwegian for June and I can't wait to see what they have to offer. Carnival is more of a party atmosphere.

Cruising is one of those you either love it or hate it kind of things, I think.
  • Yes. H and I did and Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon and had a fantastic time. We took Carnival cruises, did the inner passage, and were happy with them. I do recommend booking excursions through outside vendors we were really happy with our vendors and saved a ton of money. Cruisecritic.com is an excellent resource for vendors and ships.

If we did it again we may choose Disney cruise line because everything I have heard is absolutely amazing. Adults can enjoy it and have a practically kid free experience.
