can anyone give me a run down of all the leap pad options?
Jake has a Leap Pad (the original one that first came out) and I want to get Liam one for Christmas. But, now I see there are tons of choices! Leap Pad 2, Leap Pad Ultra, Leap Pad 2 Power...help! What do I need for a 2.5 year old?
Re: can anyone give me a run down of all the leap pad options?
I was totally going to ask this same question! I was in Target over the weekend, and was totally confused by the options. I am also torn between doing something like the Leap Pad or something like an iPad mini.
I was considering this, or was also thinking of maybe getting Jake a Nintendo DS and giving the Leap Pad to Liam, but then I remembered that these two fight over anything that isn't identical, so for my own sanity, thought it would be best to stick to a Leap Pad for now!

I've spent almost nothing on the ipad games, and he's still in love with it. So many free game options. the leap pad stuff was expensive.
Michael has an ipad mini. I got a strong speck case for it. He's had it a year, and I've bought maybe $10 in games total, but he has a ton of apps, can use it to watch a show on a plane, etc. I love it.
There are a ton of great preschool apps. Smart Apps for Kids is an awesome source for free stuff.
Thanks, Lisa! At first I wasn't considering an iPad at all...we are not a techy family so I didn't think something like that was really necessary, but the more I compare our options, it does seem to make the most sense for what we are looking for!
WalMart will have them for $299 with a $100 gift card back for Black Friday on Thanksgiving. Too bad I'll be stuffing my face with turkey.
OK now you have me looking at these - whats the walmart special Emmy? I only see it for $77 http://www.walmart.com/ip/LeapFrog-LeapPad2-Explorer-Kids-Learning-Tablet-Green/20926333

Jackson's had his for two years and it still works well.
This is the case I got for Michael.
I love it!
I opted against leap pad and went with the Nabi 2 last year for Adam. it is onsale black Friday for $99 at walmart... I go it "cheap" for like $145 last year from best buy online wed.
It has time controls and all. ( we had to update but the new probably come with it?) recharges has a mommy mode. android tablet. comes with a bunch of stuff. some of which is just demos or you have to pay to use,and its own app center. but you can put the amazon app store on it and get reg things. I opened and set Adams all up with angry birds and where's my water and things so it was ready to go on Christmas.

We have iPads and a mini iPad and the app availability is limitless (I even have a Mandarin and Spanish app on there).. Almost all apps DD uses are free; most paid apps have a free version then if we like it, we buy the full version ($1-5). She got iTunes gift cards for her birthday so she buys her apps with her card.
We also have tons of YouTube videos marked for her including all of the Mister Rogers neighborhood series. We also download full length, digital copies of movies so when we were in Chicago last week, we had Cinderella and cars to watch anytime
Then since the iPad's iTunes accounts are linked with our phones; I can download any of those to my phone for no extra charge.
My vote is the iPad mini. Way more versatility. We don't have anything more than a screen protector in ours but they have tons of case options.
Our original iPad 2 is now almost 3 years and going strong.
that was part of my sale on a tablet too rather than a leap pad- you don't HAVE to buy games AND he was already playing "real" games on DH's phone and has other "kid video game" opions like a vsmile pocket and laptops. Part of the deal was to get him OFF of Dh's phone so he needed to be able to have the same games.

I think you'd be fine with just a regular LeapPad, Emmy. The LeapPad2 isn't really any different than the first one (at least not enough to make a difference.)
I'm just not comfortable with giving my kid their own tablet computer. I may be paranoid, but I worry about the radiation as well as her eyes, etc. The LeapPad is also more sturdy/durable because it's made specifically for kids, and my kid is hard on things. I can imagine she'd break a regular tablet in no time.
The games can be a bit pricey, but I only ever buy them when they're on sale. Last year I got $20 app cards for $12.
