NBR: Christmas Decorations
OK, don't hate me. I'm starting to get in the holiday spirit. My house is quite anemic in the area of Christmas decorations. I have plenty of ornaments and a few doodads, but really, that's it. After a decade of living in my house. It's starting to feel pathetic.
What are your favorite decorative items? Where have you found good deals? I'm looking for solar window candles (that don't cost a fortune). I love the look, but I'll never remember to plug them in each night or turn them on, so I think solar is probably the best way to go. I only need about 6, I think. Also, I would love a nice tree skirt. I have one that I bought at Walmart about 8 years ago, but it doesn't fit around my tree base properly and I'm always fussing with it to look right. I need a tree topper too. My mom made me a giant bow because she felt bad about my naked tree top, but it's been crushed over the years in storage. I'd rather a start or something like it, than an angel.
Anyway, that's far more detail that I needed to give! What does your house look like on the inside? Do you decorate like crazy or skip it?

Lights: I have a Cape house so we have some nice peaks to work with and put up icicle lights on the front and side of the house that you can see from the street. We also decorate a few of the bushes/trees and have them on a timer. Super helpful for coming home late in the dark :-)
Inside: I decorate with candles because I like how they make the house smell. I also have a few small nickknacks from Yankee Candle/Christmas Tree Shops. DH buys me one of those cheap ceramic houses CVS sells around the holidays & puts it in my stocking so we have a small little village going. And if something were to break, I'm not heartbroken because each piece is around $2-$3. My mom also painted one of those ceramic Christmas trees with the built in lights and a light bulb to illuminate it so I put that out in one room. DH also has his countdown calendar from when he was a little kid so that gets put up in the living room too. We don't have a tree topper FWIW.
Lots of music box type things too, which is my weakness.
My holiday decor is mostly a tree decorated with memory ornaments. Gifts, souvenirs, things like that. We don't have a tree topper because we haven't found one that fits into that criteria yet.
Also snowglobes and music boxes. All. Over. The. Place.
Love them.
I would have the house decorated now, but even though Thanksgiving is later this year, I don't want to do it until the Friday after. It's tradition.
Oh, we also decorate with LEGO Winter Village sets.
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
"I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”

Ikea, Target, Cracker Barrel's store, and Peir One have excellent decorations for little money. I confess, though, the favorites of my collection was purchased the week after Christmas from Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, and West Elm. Actually, most of my seasonal decorations were originally purchased a week or so after said season at a steal.
I don't get to decorate my house (3 cats would ruin everything, and we have no storage in our townhome), but I decorate our cabin like crazy, even though I only get to see it for 2 or 3 weekends when it's decorated.
I put up 2 trees. One is decorated in silver and red, with a silver sequined star topper and silver tree skirt. The other has all of the ornaments from when I was a kid and souvenirs and things, and that has a big silver bow that lights up as a tree topper.
My mom and I usually go out the day after Christmas and hit Target, Wal-Mart, and other random stores, and buy decorations for 50% off. It's fun because I put everything away when I get home, then completely forget what I bought until the next year when I go to decorate. Always a nice surprise!
