update on me

I mentioned briefly in the TTC check in on Tuesday about me and baby.  I had an appointment on Monday with a high risk specialist because my cervix is shortening. Normal cervical length up to 34 weeks is 4-5 cm.  Mine is at 2.6 cm. So, they are concerned.  I have to go in again on December 5 for a recheck and if at that time it is shorter, I will be put on bed rest because there is a significant risk (like 50%) of going into preterm labor. So, it is a bit of a scary time for me and baby.

My midwives appointment was yesterday and luckily they were able to talk me down a bit about the whole situation. She said the high risk doctor was there to figure out what was high risk about me. The midwives are there to figure out what is normal about me. They were reassuring. They told me that if it comes back that my cervix is shorter in two weeks, we will see how modified bed rest goes, and monitor me more closely.  Seeing them made H and I much more comfortable and reassured about the whole situation.

Thank you all so much for the thoughts, it has really meant a lot. I'm still scared and everything is a little uncertain, but we're trying our best to stay positive.

Re: update on me

  • I am very glad for the update, I've been worried!  I'm also glad the midwife was there to reassure you.  FWIW, I know lots of people who had to go on some kind of bed rest and everything went perfectly fine and they had healthy, happy babies.  I'll continue to keep you in my prayers!!

  • I'm glad you got some reassurance from your midwife. Your medical team seems to be on top of the problem, and hopefully nothing will progress. Sending so much love to you! <3

  • I have been worried too. I am glad to hear that things are under control. I hope that you don't have to go on bed rest but if you do I want to hear about all those books your going to be reading. Lol

Oh, the books I could read, that would be a high point!

I would hope, depending on the situation, that I would still be able to work. My boss is pretty flexible, so it could be a possibility.

I've been thinking about you too.  I'm happy that you have a great team to be there and support you through this.  I'll keep you in my T&P's.  In the meantime, are they advising you to do or not do anything?

  • Sounds like you have awesome doctors and midwives to help you!  Glad your boss is flexiable too!  You and baby are still in my T&P that it's not shortened any more in 2 weeks.

Nope, they just want to wait and see what it does while I am doing my normal life stuff. If it stays where it is or gets longer, I can continue my normal activities. If it gets even 1/10th shorter, it will be bed rest for me.

  • You've been in my thoughts, thanks for the update.  Keep us all posted!  Also, enjoy all that reading time!

  • I've been thinking of you! It sounds like you have a great team around you during this scary time. But if bed rest is what you need, it will be worth it for the health of your and the baby! T&ps!

@WillyH19 I was thinking about you and praying for you.  I know your diagnosis is scary, but it's not as bad as it sounds.  A coworker just went on bedrest for the same condition.  She got a cerclage and everything will be fine.  This is #3 for her and her first 2 were perfectly healthy, full-term babies.  If you need support, I can ask her if she'd be willing to email you with questions you may have.

Although bed rest is boring, you'll be able to read a ton and you'll be very relaxed when baby gets here :)

ETA- my coworker has always had this issue with all of her pregnancies.
  • Thanks so much ladies, I really appreciate all the kind words, encouragement and thoughts you have been sending.

@mbuckley85, I am not a good candidate for a cerclage due to the shape of my cervix and the fact that this is my first pregnancy, plus my high risk specialist doesn't really do too many of them, because the studies are inconclusive on whether they are beneficial or not.
