NBR: Christmas Decorations

OK, don't hate me.  I'm starting to get in the holiday spirit.  My house is quite anemic in the area of Christmas decorations.  I have plenty of ornaments and a few doodads, but really, that's it.  After a decade of living in my house.  It's starting to feel pathetic.

What are your favorite decorative items? Where have you found good deals?  I'm looking for solar window candles (that don't cost a fortune).  I love the look, but I'll never remember to plug them in each night or turn them on, so I think solar is probably the best way to go.  I only need about 6, I think.  Also, I would love a nice tree skirt.  I have one that I bought at Walmart about 8 years ago, but it doesn't fit around my tree base properly and I'm always fussing with it to look right.  I need a tree topper too. My mom made me a giant bow because she felt bad about my naked tree top, but it's been crushed over the years in storage.  I'd rather a start or something like it, than an angel.

Anyway, that's far more detail that I needed to give!  What does your house look like on the inside? Do you decorate like crazy or skip it?

Re: NBR: Christmas Decorations

  • Do you have a Hobby Lobby nearby?  They have really nice holiday decorations and are often included in their 40-50% off sales.  I bought my tree skirt there last year.

I have also found some fun stuff at Pier One and Kirklands after Christmas for cheap.  It might be worth it to look this year after the holidays to get some great deals.

I like to decorate a lot for Christmas.  It's probably too much sometimes, but it makes me happy so I do it.

  • We used to have a Hobby Lobby, but I think they closed. I'll have to take a look!

  • I love decorating for Christmas!! We have lots if stuff for indoors and out. I got my tree skirt years ago at Winners (marshalls). I love it
  • I can't help with the tree topper because I'm fussy about the stars I would put on one.  And angels are too religious for me so I avoid them.  I was doing bows but two years ago, I did a stormtrooper mask.  Last year, the HP tree got postponed so I may do that this year.  We have a pair of glasses that I could use as a topper but I need to figure out how to get them to stay on the tree.

So ... I'm no help with any of it.  Sorry.

How about floral wire for the tree topper glasses?

  • I put up 8 christmas trees last year (7 in the house and 1 in the gazebo) and my other decorations are mainly my santa collection.  I am not one for knick knacks for the most part.  I am a sucker for Santa Clauses.  In the past month I have gone to HomeGoods and added 3 more santas to my collection for this year.  And I think my husband has ordered me this guy for a Christmas presentimage

  • Surprisingly, Home Depot has good decorations.  And Target.  Or Etsy, but that requires cyberwindow shopping.

  • Lights: I have a Cape house so we have some nice peaks to work with and put up icicle lights on the front and side of the house that you can see from the street. We also decorate a few of the bushes/trees and have them on a timer. Super helpful for coming home late in the dark :-)

Inside: I decorate with candles because I like how they make the house smell. I also have a few small nickknacks from Yankee Candle/Christmas Tree Shops. DH buys me one of those cheap ceramic houses CVS sells around the holidays & puts it in my stocking so we have a small little village going. And if something were to break, I'm not heartbroken because each piece is around $2-$3.  My mom also painted one of those ceramic Christmas trees with the built in lights and a light bulb to illuminate it so I put that out in one room. DH also has his countdown calendar from when he was a little kid so that gets put up in the living room too. We don't have a tree topper FWIW.

Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • I don't do much on the outside.  Just candles in the windows that we got from Big Lots a few years ago.  There is a surprisingly good selection there for holiday stuff.
Lots of music box type things too, which is my weakness.
My holiday decor is mostly a tree decorated with memory ornaments.  Gifts, souvenirs, things like that.  We don't have a tree topper because we haven't found one that fits into that criteria yet.
Also snowglobes and music boxes.  All. Over. The. Place.
    Love them.
I would have the house decorated now, but even though Thanksgiving is later this year, I don't want to do it until the Friday after.  It's tradition.
Oh, we also decorate with LEGO Winter Village sets.

  • Ikea, Target, Cracker Barrel's store, and Peir One have excellent decorations for little money.  I confess, though, the favorites of my collection was purchased the week after Christmas from Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, and West Elm.  Actually, most of my seasonal decorations were originally purchased a week or so after said season at a steal.

  • I don't get to decorate my house (3 cats would ruin everything, and we have no storage in our townhome), but I decorate our cabin like crazy, even though I only get to see it for 2 or 3 weekends when it's decorated.

I put up 2 trees. One is decorated in silver and red, with a silver sequined star topper and silver tree skirt. The other has all of the ornaments from when I was a kid and souvenirs and things, and that has a big silver bow that lights up as a tree topper.

My mom and I usually go out the day after Christmas and hit Target, Wal-Mart, and other random stores, and buy decorations for 50% off. It's fun because I put everything away when I get home, then completely forget what I bought until the next year when I go to decorate. Always a nice surprise!

No hate here.. I've been listening to Christmas music for a week and a half.

I am hosting Thanksgiving this year, so I can't decorate until the day after, which I'm kind of bummed about.  We do lights around the outside, candy cane lights that line our front walk and snowflake lights in the front window.

Inside, we decorate a 7 foot tree with lights and ornaments and have tons of other decorations.  I have gotten a lot of good decorations at Target, Ikea and Home Goods over the years.  Our outdoor decorations are all from Lowes and Home Depot.

ETA:  Do you have a Home Goods near you?  They usually have a nice selection of tree skirts.  That's actually on my list to get this year once we take down the tree stand - it's a weird size and I have a hard time finding one that fits.

  • My favorite thing is that we don't do "pretty" ornaments.  Not that I have anything against beautiful trees, but almost all of our ornaments are special and not matchy.  They're things like clay ornaments I made as a child and gifts from friends, and crafts from George and Gemma.  Putting them on the tree and getting all nostalgic about where each one came from is my favorite.

I could do that.  Twist ties from bread loaves would probably work too.  I need to think about this.

  • WE go ridiculously crazy here for christmas at our house, mostly DH really, and every year we add something. I would definitely recommend heading to Hobby Lobby if you have one by you, this week they have all the christmas decors, I mean everything christmas for 50% off ( they put them on sale every other week) , Home Goods is also a good place to go.

We have giant 12 foot tall tree and it is covered with red, and gold ornaments, along with our lenox ornaments. I get the kids a different lenox ornament every year since birth with their name and year personalize on it, and also some Ukrainian ornaments that were wedding gifts to us.

We also put a 9 foot tall tree in the kids playroom with all their special ornaments that we make at home, they love it and get to decorate it anyway they want, this year we collected pinecones every where we found them and make green and red ornaments out of them for their tree. We make a different homemade ornament every year.

I will also do a small live christmas tree this year for my kitchen with all kitchen ornaments I got after christmas last year, and along with some crystals ornaments.

we got a piano last summer, and I've this year we've decided to add Christmas carolers ( found some vintage one), and a nutcrackers on there as well ( that's the new thing for us this year) .

We put lots of light and a giant Wreath outside.

I would say take your time and add a little or something different every year, don't try to do it all at once.
  • I love Christmas decorations. Our tree is humongous but it's not pretty at all. We put random ornaments all over it from when we were kids or just fun ones I like.

I mainly get ornaments and decorations from Target, Michael's, and The Biltmore House when we go each year.

  • I am doing a red and gold theme.  For deals decor-wise, I recommend Walmart and The Dollar Store or The Dollar Tree.  Also, local places have some nice stuff but it might be more expensive.  I wouldn't say I go crazy, but I do decorate and love Christmas.
