Breech Baby!

I had my 34-week appointment on Wednesday, and it appeared that baby is still hanging out in a breech position, as she has been pretty much at every recent appointment.  I haven't had an ultrasound since the a/s, so my doctor is going based on feel and the position of the heartbeat.  He has never seemed concerned, but did say this time that if LO doesn't flip into a head-down position by my 36-week appointment, we would start to discuss "options."

Total FTM and newbie question, but I'm just curious if anyone has experience with this.  Do I still have a pretty good chance that she'll get flipped around in the next few weeks?  Dr. Google is giving me mixed answers, and some people seem to say that babies can continue to flip back and forth even up to 40 weeks.  At what point did your doctors start talking c-sections or other interventions?  I'm pretty go-with-the-flow when it comes to my expectations for the birth, but I also like to mentally prepare myself for things like this :)

  • I don't have experience with this, but my SIL was told at 34w that they would talk about csections if her DS didn't flip by her next appointment at 36w and he did! There's hope!
Hearing this makes me super happy :)

  • I hope that baby flips for you!
  • Definitely try spinningbabies.com.  I believe babies can still technically turn and flip even during delivery, but it is less common and docs usually don't want to risk it and the complications it can cause during labor.

DS was sunny side up when I checked into triage, so they had me in all different positions trying to get him to turn towards my back.  During all that, he turned transverse before finally turning the correct way.  So obviously there's some room for them to move around in there based on my experience.

  • LO was also breech at my 33 week appt but then at my next appt, he flipped. I wish I had tips on how he turned but he's a mover and a shaker so I think he just did it himself. There are "tricks" out there but kinda like tricks to go into labor, not sure how much stock I'd put into them. There is a medical way of internally flipping then but it sounds very painful and risky. I hope she flips for you.

  • DS was breech (even when he broke my water - still breech).

My OB offered me two options - schedule a c/s or try to turn him.

When they offer to physically turn the baby it is done at about 37 weeks at the hospital with the OR prepped for an emergency c/s because it can send the baby into distress. Also, even if it is successful, sometimes the baby turns back.

My OB thought that babies are smart and if they can't turn, there must be a reason.

I opted not to do the manual turn (e version) and had the c/s because I didn't want to risk DS being born that early.

I hope your LO turns for you. Feel free to ask me any questions if you want.

Thanks for all of the information ladies! I'm going to check out spinningbabies.com and educate myself a little bit on versions. I want to be prepared for any potential discussion at 36 weeks, but truly hope it's all for naught :)

ETA: @cinderin Your doctor's comment about babies not turning for a reason is interesting to me. I will be curious to hear my doctor's take on that!

  • My DD was breech from 30 weeks on. She never turned and we did a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks. Near the end I actually stopped wanting her to turn because I was so excited knowing the exact day she would be born.
