gender neutral clothing for team green mama's.

With the hopes that I convince DH to stay team green during my a/s next week, where are some good places to get gender neutral sleepers and such? I know there are some limited that would work for both at any department store, but not a huge selection. Am I just doomed to the idea of having to shop several places to get a good start on it? I got rid of all of DS's clothes under 12m so even if we have a boy, I am starting fresh clothes wise.

Also was thinking for going home outfit to get one of each gender. What are your thoughts on this?

I know several people who did buy both a girl and boy coming home outfit and just return/donate the one they didn't need.  I just brought a gender neutral outfit with ducks on it and both DD and DS wore it home from the hospital which I thought was special.

I tend to find that a lot of times more boy stuff seems gender neutral to me as opposed to girl's things in stores that they tend to always put little feminine touches on like bows, ruffles, etc...so I just would shop in the boys section and buy things that didn't scream boy.

Plus I only had to buy a few outfits ahead of time.  It's not like you have to have a full wardrobe before they're born.

ETA: I also did appreciate having gender neutral items that I was able to re-use.  And once people found out we had a girl, everything was pink so I was glad people didn't know ahead of time and I got things that broke up the onslaught of pepto bismol pink.

  • I shopped before I knew, before I even knew it was multiples... I hate all the yellow/green crap I bought. I'd wait and just have one going home outfit. Unless you'll love it on a girl or boy!

  • Thanks ladies!! I know I don't need a lot to start off, but I didn't have quite enough onsies/sleepers with DS and I felt like I did laundry every other day. It was annoying. I'd like to at least have enough to get through 3 days without having to wash just so he/she has something to wear.. lol

  • We were given lots of gender neutral onesies the first time around and they seemed to be mostly Carters brand. I ended up using all of them even though she was a girl but the yellow/green worked. I know, I'm not a big fan of the color selection at the time but you go through them so quickly, it didn't matter. We did end up running to the store to get girl PJs but we even picked up some boy ones that were too cute and still passed as neutral.

See I think a lot more than green and yellow can pass as gender neutral. Grays, browns, reds, and even blues...really mostly any color as long as they don't have gender specific sayings or bows and whatnot, I think they work. Especially for sleeping around the house.

  • My SIL bought us this one early on. If we were team green, baby s would come home in this.

  • I had a boy and girl outfit for coming home but my mom crocheted the boy one and the girl one was mine from when I was a baby and they just went over a white onesies.

Like @bobcee said, boy's clothes are easier to make gender neutral. I loved all my gender neutral clothes and putting a girly twist on them. I say just shop and buy what you like and you will be able to make it work.

Also, it is easier to buy in store rather than online because they divide things up online by boy/girl and you end up looking at a lot ofobviously not gender neutral. Honestly I didn't fins any store or brand tthat was better for gender neutral though. Children's Place and Gymboree are mainly boy/girl though.

I still get Ava Nichol neutral clothes but it is getting more difficult because the sizing is different between boy and girl now.

  • I have a bassinet full of gender neutral stuff that my MIL, mom and GMIL bought us. Most of it is from Carter's, as my MIL went crazy one day and bought everything they had that was remotely gender neutral in 0-3 months. My mom then bought us some newborn sized stuff too. We also have some stuff from Gymboree.

We have coming home outfit picked out that's gender neutral. I'm not terribly worried about having a gender specific outfit for coming home, it's a whole 3 miles and it will only be H and I here that day. Plus, it had to be warm, really warm... it's super cold here in January. After we're home for a bit and are ready to get out we'll go shopping for boy or girl stuff... or we'll just wait for the Grandmas to show up... they're obsessed with buying baby clothes!
