Flex Spendjng Accounts?

As it is open enrollment for us now, just wondering if anyone else uses a flex spending account and how much you generally put in yours. DH and I got in a huge argument last year because he thought I should do $10/paycheck ($260/year) and I thought I should do $20/paycheck ($520/year). We ended up compromising at $15/paycheck ($390/year) and could have blown through it in the first half of the year. We ended up not using it for half our copays, none on dental expenses, and none toward prescriptions (and DH is on 3 prescription meds!)

Unfortunately, DH is subjected to a high deductible this year ($2000). It's basically my company's punishment for him being eligible for insurance through his job and declining it. I can afford it mpre than him, and since we will need a family plan come February, it's cheaper to just suck up the deductible. DH started an FSA account and is putting about $1250/year on and I'm going to do my own separate account with almost as much to cover the $750 deductible the baby and I will have (combined). Is anyone else's insurance company screwing them royally this year???

Re: Flex Spendjng Accounts?

  • We did a flex spending acct for this year of $1000. We blew through it by June/July. It is pre-tax so that $10000 only cost us $750. For next year I told my husband to sign up for the most we could $2000 or $2500 (can't remember which). It will definitely be used. We also have separate insurances through our own employers , was cheaper this way until we have a family and even then we maybe keep separate and have one of us as single plus child instead of family.

I do ours. I used to put in like $250/ye to cover my bc monthly, two dr visits and some of my glasses. After they made bc have no co pay, and now I'm not on it, I only did like $100 this year for my glasses. You will probably have daycare soon though and you can flex that!! So I would figure out how much you will have to spend on daycare and max that out!

I'm lucky that my work has good insurance and we picked the deductible rate we'd like. Sorry!
