Flying with a pet?

We are planning to do across country for 3 weeks this summer for vacation and want to take our cat with us because he needs a lot of attention and it's hard to find someone to watch him for a few days let alone a few weeks.  I saw that Southwest lets you bring pets onboard in their carriers now.  Has anyone done this with a cat?  Do you have to keep the carrier under the seat the entire way?  Can you take them out of it at all?  How did your cat do with a long flight?  What do you do about them going to the bathroom?  Is it better to do one longer direct flight or split it up with a layover?  Will they let you take them outside at all if you have a layover?  Thanks!

Re: Flying with a pet?

  • Well...

The only experience I have with this was smuggling a kitten aboard a flight when I was like 8.  Flew from San Fran to Atlanta direct, so it was about 4 hours.  She was a sweet little thing and just sat curled up in a ball in my jacket the entire way.  I was pretty young, so I didn't think about the whole bathroom thing.  But I don't recall having issues with that.

This was also pre-9/11 so the stewardess just kind of rolled her eyes and let me proceed when they heard the meowing.  I was visiting grandparents, so I was flying alone.

I don't know about you, but my cat HATES her crate.  When I take her to visit my parents over long holidays, she will yowl for the entire 3-hour drive.  And I do mean yowl - as though she is in pain and I'm torturing her.  It's awful, so I only do it when absolutely necessary.  I could never make it on a flight with her, because presumably she would have to be in her crate through security, etc. also.  You would need to ask Southwest if they are allowed out, but I would very much expect that the answer is no.

H and I don't like taking her to be boarded, but with longer trips we really don't have a choice.  Lady will be going to the "Pink Paw Pet Spa" while we are in London next summer, because they let them run around play areas, etc. and they aren't kept in those awful tiny cages the entire time.  My H thinks I'm crazy, but it costs about the same as I would pay somebody to come watch her... and then I know she's being taken care of, and I don't have to have a person come into my house while I'm gone.  Have you looked into something like this?

  • And because I can't resist AWing pet pics whenever this topic comes up...

PS: don't judge the ugly Lazy Boy... circa 1979, and the thing is still amazing.  I'm going to get it re-covered after we buy a house and get a proper decor scheme going.

  • We flew with 2 of our cats from our last move, from Seattle down to Atlanta. Our cats hate, hate, hate their crates but that's the only way to do it. Basically instead of your normal carry-on bag you take the cat-crate and stow it under your seat. We weren't allowed to open the crate or take the animals out at all during the flight but they did ok. Your vet can give you some sedation pills for your cat if you think he will be really stressed by the trip (we had them, but only gave them to one of our cats who was very anxious). Mostly our cats just slept in their crates and it was a pretty easy trip (aside from our checked bags being lost but that's unrelated, lol). Good luck!

  • Check with your airline's online pet policy info. It will spell out for you what to expect and what you can and cannot do.

Also, you should look that up at the TSA's website too.

Unless you have a service animal, it is pretty much against airline policies and probably federal law to have an animal out of its crate on board an airplane. The airline's first priority is safety, then comfort. An animal getting loose could jeopardize safety, so they will probably ask you to leave your pet crated. If you don't follow the rules, you will have flight attendants very angry with you...and then the pilots can ask you to leave a flight (if you have not yet let the gate). Not complying with air crew directions in flight can be cause for arrest once you land.

Most jets also have heated cargo bays on board, so you can check your pet too.

  • I would recommend making sure to have documentation that your cat is current on all of it's shots.
