No, I'm not talking about your tata's. Get your head out of the gutter.

Do you get a real Christmas tree or a fake one?

  • I'm excited.  I think we're going to go get a real one on Friday.  This will be the first time I've had a real tree since I was 5.

Any tips or pointers to keeping up with it?  Besides putting water in the stand. lol. Or any certain type to buy?

  • Yay, exciting Brij.  Just make sure that it fits good in your house.  Lol, a couple years ago, when we were dating, we went and got a tree, I was so excited since I hadn't gotten one in such a long time, so I wanted a BIG ONE.  Well, we got the big one, but it was just a little too big for the house.  Haha, Omg it was tall!  I couldn't put anything at the top of it. We had to trim it pretty good.

Image and video hosting by TinyPicimageimage

  • @cloudymeatballs Uh oh.  That's probably the direction I'm wanting to go.  We have 12 foot tall ceilings, and I want it to reach the top (I will put a bow on top instead of a topper).  It's also going in a room that we have a lot of space in.  I showed H where all I wanted it to fill, and he just rolled his eyes and asked how I'm getting it in there.  Heck, I don't know.  We're getting a real tree, and I'm flippin excited about it!

  • REAL. We cut it down every year since I moved out of my parents. I'm trying to get DH to go this weekend to cut it down. It should easily last a month - month and a half. Best thing is the tree is only $50 no matter the size or type. I'm hoping for a blue spruce but have yet to find one I like. Otherwise I just go for one with softer needles if I can.

@brij2006 - If your ceilings are 12 foot then go for like 10 1/2 foot tree so there is room for the stand and the topper. Also, figure out how wide you want it. Last year was our first year in this house and I knew the height I wanted but not width. I oops'd and got a 5 foot wide tree and the room is was in is only 10 feet wide... it was very griswaldy. I loved it but it was just so fat!

  • @islandmonkey8 Only $50 for the tree?  That's an awesome place!

I will definitely be sure to measure the width too.  This could be an interesting experience. The only real tree experience I remember is my parents being frustrated with all of the needles in the carpet.  We have hardwood, so hopefully this won't be too bad.

    Yes it is awesome.

Another tip... before you put it in the stand punch a hole in a giant garbage bag around the trunk that way when it is time to take it down you can pull the bag straight up and save yourself some needles everywhere.

Also, placing plastic or a garbage bag under the stand is a good idea in case you miss or over fill when watering the tree.

Are you cutting yours down or picking it out from a store like Home Depot or something?

  • @brij2006 We too have hardwood floors.  Definitely not that bad.  Carpet would be horrible. I remember hearing my Mom complaining about it.  They just went fake about 7 years ago.  Lol, she got older and it just is easier for her.  12 feet ceilings, you can get agood tree.  :)

@islandmonkey8 how fun.  Chopping down your own tree, and only $50 that's awesome.

  • I saw these cool smellcicles at home depot, Michaels and target this past weekend that came in pine, fir and cinnamon for you to hang on your fake tree and wreath to make itsmell real/good. I like the pine scent and my mom liked the fir. They smell like real tree not perfume.

They seem to be about $7 a pack but were on sale for $4 at Michaels.

We do a real tree and my parent's do a fake.

  • Fake. We always had a real tree growing up and I swore I'd keep that tradition going but fake trees are just so much easier in my opinion. I'm too lazy to dig our big tree out of storage this year so I bought a small fake tree. Little girl Xan would be so ashamed.

If we ever have kids we will probably switch back to a real tree. Going and cutting down our own tree was such a fun thing to do as a family and I'd want my kids to have those memories too.

  • I've always had a real tree, but we broke down and got a really nice fake one last year.  With two crazy dogs the needles were just too much.  We also have really high ceilings and it was almost impossible to find a real tree that was nice and tall, but not too huge/wide.  Our fake one is 10' tall, but on the more narrow side.  We also got those scenticles for the tree!  They smell amazing!

  • We've always had fake until last year when we got a real tree b/c our fake one bit the bullet. I was congested and sneezed all month, but it wasn't as bad as when I was younger so I guess that's good. I don't know if we're even going to do a tree this year. I kinda want to, but we've had too much going on with moving, renovations, and medical stuff, so I'm just not sure I even want to mess with it at this point.

I'm trying to convince DH we need a fake tree for the basement in addition to the real one in the living room. I'm close to breaking him. Very close.
