NBR: Black Friday Shopping

Who plans on going? I just don't think I am up for it this year. Although, I am tempted since I know artifical trees will be on sale and I need one. I just don't know if it is worth it. I didn't go last year and kind of missed it, but it has just gotten so out of hand. I don't want to support the craziness of it all. I hate that stores open on Thansgiving now. I much preferred it when 4:00 or 5:00 am was early enough and it was mostly just little packs of bleary- eyed women shopping, usually accompanied by a strong cup of coffee. It felt like some sort of secret society and was a lot of fun.

Re: NBR: Black Friday Shopping

  • I plan on shopping Cyber Monday.  Black Friday would make me want to punch people.

  • I usually go, but this year I'm looking more at stores offering the same deals online.  I did buy some gift certificates through my daughter's school (they cost the same to me, $50 for $50, but the school gets a percentage of the cost of the gift card) with the intention of using them for Black Friday.
Last year I shopped mostly at the Disney Store - the entire store was 20% off - but I found out that they offered the same sale online.

  • I celebrate Buy Nothing Day the day after Thanksgiving.  I've been running a coat drive at work all month, and Tatum and I are going to go and deliver a huge load of coats to a winter coat exchange on Friday morning, and then if the weather is good, we might go to the zoo.  We're also supposed to meet DH for lunch (so I guess technically, we are going to buy lunch, but I don't count food, just "things").

I despise the very idea of "black Friday."  The over-consumption and commercialism that Christmas has come to represent disgusts me.

    Sorry to be a downer.
  • I would rather spend a day with my MIL than go shopping on Black Friday.

  • I used to do it, but I just don't have the patience anymore.  I'm hoping to do most of my shopping online this year.

  • Not a chance for me.  Most of the time, the Black Friday deals are repeated again the following weekend.  I have found better deals the Friday after Black Friday (which is traditionally when I do most of my shopping.)  I may do some online shopping because I have found ebates!  What took me so long to find ebates?

  • Though I am Canadian and we celebrate Thanksgiving in October, some of our stores do Black Friday (on the same day the U.S. has it).  I have never went because I don't like crowds or the fear of getting trampled or maced.  I never understood why people think it is okay to assault someone to get a good deal.  IMO, it would be better to just steal it without actually hurting anyone (not recommending stealing, I'm just saying if you are going to break the law, stick it to "the man"/big corporate chain instead of some little old lady).  However, I do usually participate in Cyber Monday.

  • I went black friday shopping once in Buffalo. Thought we got great deals. Got home and saw the same sales going on up here.
The big thing about it for me was going to Target (before they came to Canada). Now I have no desire.
I will check out cyber monday though.

This is the exact reason I don't go out on Boxing Day. I worked in retail through HS and college and saw a lot of crazy things go down while crowds grappled for a half price printer. Now that I don't have to be out in the mess, I stay home in my pajamas. If there's anything I MUST HAVE, I can usually get it online.

As for me, I plan to take advantage of a few of the online BF and CM sales this week, but it's not nearly as big a "thing" up here since it's not our holiday.

  • @ashleyt121 boxing day is nuts. I refused to work boxing day after the first year that I did. It was just stupid.
  • Nope!  I do 95% of our Christmas shopping online!  I'm in really good shape so far.  The girls are done as is Jason.  I just have a couple more presents & some giftcards to buy.  Jason is in charge of his parents & sister's gifts.  :)
  • I have to go out to buy an Xbox 360 at Gamestop.  Thats really the only thing I need to get on Friday although I might stop by a few other stores.  I'm not a stand in line doorbuster type person though.  My kids are hardup for the xbox this year.  I'm just glad I talked them down from the Xbox One.  I'll never be able to find that and its way too expensive.  They are nine years old.  They don't need a $500 gaming system.

That's awesome. My son is pretty much done, except for a few more stocking stuffers and the ride-on toy we need to pick up. All of his presents are wrapped as well. My niece, nephew, and MIL are done. Just a few more gifts for DH and my parents and I'm done. I am hoping to be completely done by the end of next week.

  • I'm planning on shopping online mostly. But we are going to stop by Office Max since it is less than 5 minutes from our house- SIL wants a printer for Christmas.  My mom and I are going around 10am to the outlet stores- we've gone around that time in the past and it's not too bad. She suggested getting me a new purse for Christmas so we'll look at Michael Kors and Coach. Plus we'll just see if there are any good deals.

  • Nope! I've actually only been once because my aunt dragged us out. It was later in the morning, so no lines, but it was still way too crowded for me. I'm almost done with shopping anyway. I only have one more gift to buy. DH does want a new laptop since his old one bit the dust, but if we're going to buy something it'll be online.

  • Nope, no shopping for us and I hate that people actually go out to buy THINGS on Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving should be a day for family and for giving thanks for the things we already have, not a day to go out and buy more crap.

  • Nopeity nope nope nope.  See SusieBW's reasons above.  I agree.

Although to be fair, we'll go to the grocery story, but we always do that at the end of the week.  I doubt they'll be mobbed with people fighting over Triscuits.

  • I don't think so. I've gone in the past, but I'm just feeling meh about it this year. There's nothing any of us really want that would be worth elbowing through the crowds.

  • I used to go every year, but stopped since the year before last. I always enjoyed getting up really early to go out Friday morning, but now that it's run into Thursday all day it's just not fun. I refuse to shop on Thanksgiving day. This year I'm actually all done with my Christmas shopping except for stocking stuffers that I can easily grab some other time. Online shopping is the way to go.

  • I guess I'm the odd one out here, but I'm going. I won't go out on Thursday but I will on Friday. I LOVE buying presents for people and LOVE shopping and LOVE saving money. I go out with a smile on my face, am nice to everyone I come across, and expect long lines. I find it a lot of fun.

  • I am going to a handmade craft fair on Friday.  (In Canada.)   It will not be nutty or Black Friday-ish.  And I do plan to buy a couple of things online as some promo codes are popping up.

I also will probably be helping with my company's orders for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  Getting a good response so far and the code was only published 2 hours ago!  Yay!  Christmas bonus for the boss!  lol.
