If you want to give a gift, giftcards are always appreciated. Homemade food usually goes to waste.
I give to the mail carrier and the garbage men because it's a nice thing to do. Same with giving extra to familiar servers, the baristas at Starbucks, and my nail/hair people. People I cleaned for gave me extra at the holidays, too. I think of it as a gift, not a tip.
