Side sleeping?

When did you make a serious effort to start sleeping only on your side? I have been trying to since I got my BFP but have read that in first tri it I ok to still sleep on your back. Sometimes that is the only way I can get comfortable and get rest right now.

Any tips or tricks to making side sleeping easier? I definitely don't mind sleeping on my sides and do it quite a bit throughout the night but sometimes it feels so nice to lay on my back!

Re: Side sleeping?

  • 14 weeks. I found it helpful to have a pillow behind me to lean up against. I did not like the snoogle or whatever though.

My hips starting hurting from the pressure pretty early on. Always the hip I was laying on and it didn't really help to put a pillow between my knees. I got a memory foam mattress topper though which was wonderful. Couldn't have done without it.

  • I'm already mostly a side sleeper but I had to get used to sleeping with a pillow between my legs, and then upgraded to body pillow at the start of 3rd tri. You'll realize once you get a little bigger it becomes uncomfortable to be on your back.

  • I'm a stomach sleeper. It's been absolutely awful trying to get my body to sleep on it's side and according to my mom (who saw me sleeping on my couch last weekend) I'm nearly on my stomach...still. I'm just cockeyed. I cannot sleep fully on my side or on my back. If I lay on my back I have horrible dreams.

I asked my Doctor about it and they said I'd move if it was dangerous.

I slept partly on my stomach or back until my body told me no more... lol. I think that was around 23-24 weeks or so.

I started when it became uncomfortable to sleep on my back, probably around 17 weeks. I was never too concerned about this, I just do what's comfortable.

  • I read the book 'The panic Free Pregnancy' and the doctor that wrote it said your body will tell you when you need to move. Now at almost 34 weeks my sides are what is most comfortable for me. I just feel like I can't breathe if I'm flat on my back. I do recommend this book... Really puts some things women stress about into perspective.

  • What I have heard from every doctor and multiple times on the nest and bump is that your body will let you know when you can nolonger sleep on your back/stomach. You will gget uncomfortable and will be forced to sleep on your side. I definitely used pillows and a body pillow to prop myself up differently throughout the pregnancy.

  • My body did not tell me. I could have slept on my back the whole pregnancy but when I was monitored E was having decels even when I was reclining rather than laying flat.

  • I am glad you came in and said that @backseatdriver it is important to let people know that when the doctor's say your body will tell you, that isn't always accurate. Thank you.

I was a stomach sleeper and that just became impossible to do. Towards the end I wanted to sleep on my back because everything hurt so I would prop myself up into an almost sitting position and sleep thatway.

  • I'm a belly sleeper and have been on my side since about 16-17 weeks.  I am also sleeping on an incline, though, since my heartburn is INSANE.  I think I have 6 pillows propping me up.

  • I'm more of a side sleeper with a little on my stomach.  Though, I tend to always wake up on my back.  I'm not worried about it.  Only recently (these last few days) has my back started bothering me sleeping on my back.

  • I've always been a side sleeper, I sleep curled up like a cat. I haven't made any extra effort however to sleep on my left side because that is the side that my sciatica acts up on and it is painful to sleep that way. I just find ways to sleep that are comfortable for me at this point.

  • I'm mostly a side sleeper anyway. I love my snoogle (and so do the cats).

Sometimes I have to sleep on my back, propped up a little to help with heartburn.

  • I use my snoogle and have to put a pillow on the other side to get me to stay on my side. I sometimes wake up and I'm on my back.
