NBR - Can we talk cars?

What are you driving and how do you like it?

Also - does anybody have (or know somebody who has) a Kia Soul?

Anybody know anything about buying out a lease?

Car shopping is making me ragey. We were looking for used but it's such a long drive to work (40 mi each way) that I need to make sure I get something that can hold up, but they're SO EXPENSIVE (or maybe I'm just cheap.)  Somebody suggested looking into leasing with the intention of buying it out at the end since I'll be so far over the mileage.  Right now the Kia Soul is kinda in the lead but I need to make sure I get something that can handle lots of highway and can handle snow.

Re: NBR - Can we talk cars?

  • I drive a Pontiac 08 G5. I love my car but they no longer make it. It has held up really well for me though.
When I replace it it will be with a van.

My MIL recently got a chevy track and she adores it.
  • I drive a 2013 Chevy Equinox and I am in LOVE with it. Seriously.

My Mum drives a Soul and she likes it a lot, but doesn't love it like she thought she would. Her two biggest complaints are that it's not great on gas (which really surprised her) and it stinks in the smallest amount snow. She drove a little Mazda sports car before the KIA and says that Mazda was much better in the snow.

  • We have a toyota prius and a honda civic hybrid. We love both cars but I'm 100% head over heels for the prius. Our is an older generation and gets about 48 mpg (new ones can get over 50 depending on the model option). It has 170k on it and we have done nothing to it expect maintenance (oil changes, brakes, tires, etc...). It runs like a champ. Anytime we've had to drive in snow with it we've had no problems. We have friends who live in Michigan and have a prius and use it all winter long with no problem.

I haven't personally bought out a lease but I know my parents did years ago. I believe they just figure out the current value of the car, work in how much you've paid via the lease (or maybe they count just part of the lease) and get a number that way.

According to H (who is a car fanatic) the kia soul isn't bad. It does rank below average in the interior but has above average reliability. He recommends you also check out the Honda Fit, Honda Cr-V, Toyota Rav 4, Toyta Matrix Nissan Cube and Scion XB.

    Hope that helps!
  • I drive a Honda CRV & I LOVE it!!!

I've never leased but my sister did & ended up going over her milage so she ended up buying it at the end to avoid penalities.

  • I drive an 08 Nissan Rogue.  I love it, but I have the base model and always say I wish I had gotten the fancier model.
  • I am in the same exact situation.  Right now I'm driving a 98 Civic.  That thing just won't die.  Its still in good shape too.  I want a new car so bad though.  The Civic has been a really great car.  It gets good gas mileage and until the last year or two I haven't had any real problems with it.  I considered leasing but I don't want to.  I'd rather buy used.  Leasing just prolongs everything.  I don't want 10 years of car payments.  I've been looking at Nissans right now.  I wanted a Juke but my husband doesn't think its big enough.  I might get a used Rogue.

  • We have a Toyota Prius V and a Volvo XC60 crossover.  I love both cars, but we've had some surprising glitches with the Volvo (the sunroof leaked, the navigation was screwy, and some other odd issues).
I really can't recommend the Prius enough.  The model I have is kind of station-wagoney compared to the other models, and has a TON of storage.  The amount of stuff I can store in the trunk is insane.  Like, there are compartments under the mat where I can keep things that don't ever leave my car but always get in the way, such as my yoga mat, reusable grocery bags, extra sweatshirts, etc.  Also, the backseat is larger and more comfortable than the crossover.  I drive in heavy stop-and-go traffic every day, and get about 50 miles a gallon - it averages lower when it's normal highway traffic because of the way the battery charges.  I probably fill the gas tank every other month.  I don't care for the voice-activated system - although it's better than Suri it is not the best at understanding me.  I've figured out how to speak at the correct cadence, but it was a learning curve, and it still doesn't understand my husband.
It slays me that neither car we have will fit 3 carseats, and I will have to say goodbye to at least one of the cars.  Husband want to trade in my car (the Prius) and I want to trade in his, but neither of us want a minivan to be our primary vehicle.  Somebody is going to have to suck it up.  We looked at some of the larger SUVs with a 3rd row seat and not only are they ginormous gas monsters, one several years old with a healthy amount of miles costs about the same as a brand new Honda Odyssey.

  • I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 and I like it but they don't make them anymore.  I hope to replace it in a few years with a Kia Sorento.

I don't know much about the Souls in particular but my dad has been a mechanic for over 30 years and says that Kias are some of the best cars on the market right now for the price and have really good warranties.  He used to hate Kias but he says they have improved dramatically over the years.

  • I drive a 2012 Kia Sportage, and love it! I agree with the PP regarding reliability of Kias. I was nervous when I started looking at them, but after I did some research, I was sold. My car has so many fun features and I get 27 mpg, which isn't bad for an SUV. I also have the AWD version, and she does well in snow. I was able to get through icy stop signs and snowy roads just fine last year.

The Soul is an interesting car. I didn't test-drive one, but the dealership was telling me that they are super popular.

  • We have a 2008 Volvo S40 and a 2013 Audi Q5.   I am not a huge fan of the Audi, but I have had no issues with my Volvo.

The Audi seems cramped to me, the interior space is tighter in the Audi (which is an SUV) than in the Volvo (which is a sedan).

  • I'm a Honda girl. I've driven many other makes/models, and nothing is as reliable, which is what matters most to me. Currently I'm driving a Pilot, but I've also driven an Accord, CRV, and Civic. (My personal fave is the Pilot because it's roomy, but take into account that we're a family of five.)

  • I drive a 2011 red Mini Cooper convertible.  Awesome on gas, but it doesn't have 4-wheel drive so I'm housing it for the winter.  Not a big help, I know.

  • I have a 2010 Toyota Yaris liftback (technically 3-doors but who would get in by opening the back and climbing over the seats?).  It's awesome!  I get 35 mpg and Toyotas live forever.  The only drawback is it is small and therefore not as good in snow since it's so light, but we don't get a lot of snow here so it's not been a problem except the one time I couldn't get up a hill where I used to work.

It's insane how durable Toyotas are.  My old car is a 98 Corolla, and it's still chugalugging for DH although it burns oil.  He doesn't drive it much because he works from home, and the Yaris is our primary car.  The Corolla was a 3 year lease.  When the lease ran out I just continued making payments on it until it was paid off.  The Yaris was a 5 year 0% financing dealie and will be paid off in just less than a year and a half.

I had a 97 Civic and I still miss it.  That car was phenomenal.  I averaged 45MPG one summer.

  • I am a Honda girl, too.   I had to give up my beloved Civic after an accident last winter and bawled.

My mechanic who knows me so well, said "You can either buy a Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.  If you end up with anything else I will give you crap.  You want a car for your daughter to drive to university, right?"

I listened, and I ended up with a 2013 Fit and am so in love.  We only have one child... so it has plenty of room for us.  And I am thrilled I could get it in a manual transmission.  I drive a lot and spend next to nothing a week on gas.  ($20 -- and gas is expensive in Canada).

Several moms in my mom's group were having this same issue. Have you looked at Buick's suv? I'm forgetting the othe brand and model right now. I do know they were looking at/bought models with captain seats.

  • We bought our Corolla at the end of our lease.  Considering we had a crazy low lease rate and didn't put many miles on it, it was a bargain in the end.

  • I drive a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 and DH drives a 2000 Chevy Silverado. Oldies but goodies and hopefully we will be replacing mine in the next few years with a small SUV.

Car shopping sucks. We almost traded mine in this year and it was too overwhelming to deal with and DH has taken great care of our car/truck. They run amazingly and are in great shape still.

I don't even live in the snow belt or anything, but I will never drive a car without AWD. I have to go to work when I am scheduled, no matter what the weather, so I prefer the peace of mind I get from it. I drive a Subaru Forester (2006), and although I had some problems with it early on, it has been a good enough car. Next time, I am going to go smaller and get the Impreza, but I do plan to get it fully loaded because I basically drive my cars until they won't go anymore (I am 37, and this is my second car ever...my first was a Saturn that I drove for nine years, at which point the transmission went).

  • I go through cars quickly because I live so far away from work.  I'm driving 120 miles a day round trip.  I have a 2008 Ford Focus right now and I really like it.  But I think I want something a little larger so I've been looking at crossover vehicles.  They're like SUVs but built on a car body rather than a truck body.

I'm really interested in the Buick Encore.  It gets 35 mpg.  I have a friend who just bought a Subaru Crosstrek and she adores it.  I have a few more months before I need to make a decision though.

  • I'm a honda girl as well. I drive a Honda CRV and love it. Before that, I drove a Honda Civic which literally lasted FOREVER.
  • I think I had the only Civic known to man with problems.  It had electrical problems right at the end and I didn't get to 150K miles.  I loved the way it handled though.

I had an 07 3 door Yaris. I loved driving it, but it didn't like the snow in CT. I ended up trading it in for a 10 Yaris sedan that was just a bit heavier and did much better in the snow. My husband at the time was driving an 09 Yaris sedan and when we had the crazy snow a few years back he had no trouble with his commute to and from work. Hubby had a manual, I had an automatic. I would totally recommend both of them. I preferred driving the hatchback because of the blind spots being different on the sedan, but they weren't horrible.

Right now I drive a 2000 Saturn. The thing is falling apart and wouldn't get another one. All I can say for it is it did fine last winter in CT with the traction on the wheels.

My sis in law is on her second Toyota Rav4. They are amazing work horses and get decent MPGs. She has about an hour commute to work that is mostly highway. The first Rav she had was a 98. She had somewhere around 300k miles on it before it got hit by one too many deer. I don't know what year her current Rav is, but I know it can handle a car seat and hold everything for their summer vacations.

    @sassypants527
My first new car was a 2001 Hyundai accent hatchback. I had locked my keys in the car, but the trunk was open. I had to climb in the hatchback and stretch myself over the back seat to reach the keys in the ignition. Good thing I was in my early 20's and flexible! LOL
