What are you driving and how do you like it?
Also - does anybody have (or know somebody who has) a Kia Soul?
Anybody know anything about buying out a lease?
Car shopping is making me ragey. We were looking for used but it's such a long drive to work (40 mi each way) that I need to make sure I get something that can hold up, but they're SO EXPENSIVE (or maybe I'm just cheap.) Somebody suggested looking into leasing with the intention of buying it out at the end since I'll be so far over the mileage. Right now the Kia Soul is kinda in the lead but I need to make sure I get something that can handle lots of highway and can handle snow.
Re: NBR - Can we talk cars?
When I replace it it will be with a van.
My MIL recently got a chevy track and she adores it.
I haven't personally bought out a lease but I know my parents did years ago. I believe they just figure out the current value of the car, work in how much you've paid via the lease (or maybe they count just part of the lease) and get a number that way.
According to H (who is a car fanatic) the kia soul isn't bad. It does rank below average in the interior but has above average reliability. He recommends you also check out the Honda Fit, Honda Cr-V, Toyota Rav 4, Toyta Matrix Nissan Cube and Scion XB.
Hope that helps!
I drive a Honda CRV & I LOVE it!!!
I've never leased but my sister did & ended up going over her milage so she ended up buying it at the end to avoid penalities.

I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 and I like it but they don't make them anymore. I hope to replace it in a few years with a Kia Sorento.
I don't know much about the Souls in particular but my dad has been a mechanic for over 30 years and says that Kias are some of the best cars on the market right now for the price and have really good warranties. He used to hate Kias but he says they have improved dramatically over the years.

The Soul is an interesting car. I didn't test-drive one, but the dealership was telling me that they are super popular.

It's insane how durable Toyotas are. My old car is a 98 Corolla, and it's still chugalugging for DH although it burns oil. He doesn't drive it much because he works from home, and the Yaris is our primary car. The Corolla was a 3 year lease. When the lease ran out I just continued making payments on it until it was paid off. The Yaris was a 5 year 0% financing dealie and will be paid off in just less than a year and a half.

My mechanic who knows me so well, said "You can either buy a Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris. If you end up with anything else I will give you crap. You want a car for your daughter to drive to university, right?"
I listened, and I ended up with a 2013 Fit and am so in love. We only have one child... so it has plenty of room for us. And I am thrilled I could get it in a manual transmission. I drive a lot and spend next to nothing a week on gas. ($20 -- and gas is expensive in Canada).

I had an 07 3 door Yaris. I loved driving it, but it didn't like the snow in CT. I ended up trading it in for a 10 Yaris sedan that was just a bit heavier and did much better in the snow. My husband at the time was driving an 09 Yaris sedan and when we had the crazy snow a few years back he had no trouble with his commute to and from work. Hubby had a manual, I had an automatic. I would totally recommend both of them. I preferred driving the hatchback because of the blind spots being different on the sedan, but they weren't horrible.
Right now I drive a 2000 Saturn. The thing is falling apart and wouldn't get another one. All I can say for it is it did fine last winter in CT with the traction on the wheels.
My sis in law is on her second Toyota Rav4. They are amazing work horses and get decent MPGs. She has about an hour commute to work that is mostly highway. The first Rav she had was a 98. She had somewhere around 300k miles on it before it got hit by one too many deer. I don't know what year her current Rav is, but I know it can handle a car seat and hold everything for their summer vacations.

My first new car was a 2001 Hyundai accent hatchback. I had locked my keys in the car, but the trunk was open. I had to climb in the hatchback and stretch myself over the back seat to reach the keys in the ignition. Good thing I was in my early 20's and flexible! LOL
