Amazon delivery via drone

Re: Amazon delivery via drone

  • I think it's a neat concept. I can see it costing a premium, though. Just as 2-day or overnight shipping costs more than your typical free 1-week shipping option, drone delivery in 30 minutes is bound to cost more. I think it someone's willing or needs to pay to have something delivered immediately rather than waiting for standard shipping options, then that's great they get that option.

  • I agree with Lucky. It's really cool but I bet it will cost a FORTUNE and therefore won't really be accessible to most people.

    Very cool though!

  • I think the opposite. I think that it's taking jobs away from people. It's inly select items. I think the technology is cool, but not cool enough to take dinner off someone's table.
  • I think it's ridiculous. I can't think of anything I need from Amazon that quickly.

I honestly don't see its use becoming so widespread that regular delivery drivers lose out. Could it possibly become the norm someday? Yeah, sure, anything's possible, but I don't see that happening for many, many, many years to come.

For now, if I'm not on the ball enough to order something I'm going to need with enough time for standard shipping to get it to me, then I'll just suffer without it or get it late (or pay more for it to get it from a brick and mortar store).

  • Delivery drivers aren't the only ones affected. Regardless if it is many years from now or now people are losing jobs to machines. When was the last time you checked out with a person at the store where there was self check out? 10 years ago those machines were the drone delivery vessels.

I actually tend to use self checkout or a cashier 50/50 at our grocery store. I realize people have lost their cashier jobs because of the self checkout option, but I do still go to the live people about half the time (especially if I'm buying a lot).

Yes, delivery drivers and the companies that employ them would be right to worry about this taking away jobs, I'm not arguing that. I do think there will still be quite a lot of need for drivers despite drones being used. And using the drones will create jobs, too, since someone still needs to be at "home base" controlling the drone's flight.

  • Right, but it takes less employees to punch in coordinates to send a drone than it does to pull stock, pack it then ship it. One person can now do the job that three people used to do. I get that it is more cost effective for that one company, but the overall affect of companies doing this is going to be devestating to the economy when all of these people are out of work and companies are doing away with their jobs.
  • I'll be poor because Jimothy will soon no longer have a job.

  • I think that it is really cool technology advancement.  I feel like it could morph in to being used for good- homebound people getting their meds or necessary equipment with one click.

I don't think it is going create a big job crisis, there will still need to be pickers to load the equipment, logistics to track, new divisions to deal with the FAA.  All big companies are looking for the next big thing to streamline operations and cut costs- that is what the Fortune 100 company I work for does.  We have stuff that fails, some stick and really cause efficiencies.

  • I hate the idea of drones flying over my house. What happens when my ninja cat takes a drone down? Will I get a $30,000 bill from amazon? I'm way to paranoid for all that.

  • All I can picture is people swatting at the things with baseball bats or using them for target practice. Interesting idea, but I think the likelihood of something going wrong in flight may end up making this less feasible.
