Honeymoon Registry?

Let's flashback to our Knot days...

I have a friend who's getting married in May. He and his fiancee are in their 30's and have all the house-related items they need, so they're thinking about doing a honeymoon registry. They asked if I knew anything about them, but unfortunately I do not. However, I knew the perfect people to ask...my fellow Nesties! Any info anyone has about the good, the bad, the ugly, etc of honeymoon registries would be appreciated. The only thing I know is that some of them charge you a % of what people contribute to them.

We did one through Honeyfund. It's the only one I could find that didn't charge us for the site or a %. You can pay for an upgrades website so that you don't have any ads and it looks prettier (I think it was around $40). We linked our paypal account to it and a lot of people paid that way. We really liked it and it was super easy to set up and navigate through.

We used Honeyfund as well, but they weren't completely clear (at least to me) in how to set it up. I never linked it with a PayPal account, so if anyone wanted to "donate" through it then they purchased something specific and then printed a copy of that and had to mail it to us with a check. I didn't like that that was the only option we were able to give them. If I'd seen how to set up the PayPal, I would have done that so that there was an option for them to pay online and it go directly to us. Overall it's a good idea, I think.

I don't like them because they take a portion of the gift and a lot of times the guests, and sometimes the b&g don't even realize that. The biggest reason I don't like them is because usually they are set up to purchase things like snorkeling adventures or room service, but in all actuality the couple just gets a check cut to them. I'm sure the ladies above actually used the funds for what the intended, but a lot of couples don't, and I don't like that.
What happens if the couple can't afford the trip without the honey fund contributions? I think couples should plan what they can afford.
Overall, while I understand they seem like a new, interesting way to register when you can't think of things for the house to upgrade, given that there is a big split on people who don't like honeymoon registries, I would error on the side of trying not to offend my guests. Plus a lot of couples get cash without asking for it and getting a fee taken out of it. If a friend of mine asked my opinion about it, I would advise her to make the small registry and then spread via word of mouth they are saving up for the honeymoon.
That is my view of it though. Before TK, I didn't know anything about them and they didn't bother me, but now I choose not to partake in them.

I don't like them. I feel like they are asking for money. I think, if anything, your friends should just not register anywhere and they will probably just get cash/checks.

Though, if she is having a bridal shower, she should probably put together at least a small registry. It would be kind of weird to not register for anything and to have a shower. I'm sure she has some things she could upgrade or something.

I'm really not a fan of them either (for all the reasons mentioned above), but I'd feel really rude if I told my friend that. I'l just pass along the info, the good and the bad, and let them make up their own minds.
