Runners- cold weather gear

I really need to get some cold weather clothing to run in. Most of my workout clothes I wear at the gym and am hot so it's tanks and capris even in winter.

I struggle because I'm always freezing at first but then get so hot in my core!

Any specific item raves? I tried a cold weather compression shirt and tights from target and OMG they were so tight!!! I literally could not pull the tights on. I guess I could size up but I hate overly tight things! But on the flip side I have a loose fleece pair of pants and they let a lot of cold in.

Every time I look online or in store I get overwhelmed with choices! And I never know what will really be warm enough.

I'd love to not spend a small fortune too!

Re: Runners- cold weather gear

  • Last christmas K got me a pair of Reebok tights/leggins and a t-shirt too. I wouldn't classify either as really compression. but they are snug. and I would say they are about a medium weight. I can run in those, with a windbreaker or fleece (and hat/earband and gloves) through most of the winter.  You will want to feel cold when  you start out or else you will be dying by the end of the run.  I think the rule of thumb is to dress like it is 20 degrees warmer outside.  I went out once when it was in the 20s with a wind chill and felt like I really could have used thicker pants or at least something like wind-breaking pants because my thighs were cold most of the run.
  • I have the same issue...I am freezing when I start out, but am super hot before I even finish the first mile. I have a long sleeved, loose fitting Under Armour shirt that is supposed to help keep you cool.  I like it, but I will probably have to go to something a little warmer once the temps really drop.
  • I find the compression gear comfortable so I wear tights.  I have a pair from Moving Comfort that fit like a dream and have a nice thickness to them.  I have a thermal pair from Eastbay I won't recommend because the fit is crap but if you want warmth plus compression - go for a tight labeled thermal.

If you don't want tights, check out these thermal pants.

On top I wear a long-sleeve tech shirt and a thin zip up fleece I've had forever.  There are some nice looking windproof running jackets out there.  If I were going to upgrade, that's what I'd go for - something thin but with a pocket or two and some reflective something or other.
