Confession

This time of year always makes me want to move back in with my parents. Not just the stress of finances and stuff but just because it feels like home. DH pretty much feels the same way. We spend so much time out there and DD loves when we stay out there.

We kind of have a different relationship with my family. We are super close and coexist really well. The plan to move to the East Coast includes us all moving together and living together at least at first. Honestly it would be awesome if we could find a home with a finished basement apartment or even a duplex so we could live together without living together.

It just doesn't make sense at this point. There isn't enough room for us out there and we bought all new furniture when we moved in here. We also have a lease here until March.

No real point to this. We just got home today and I am already ready to go visit again. Ugh.

Re: Confession

  • How far away is your parents from you?

I know what you mean. Currently, H, Lexi and I live with my parents, my brother, his girlfriend and their daughter, my grandmother and a dog and cat. It's an extremely crazy house, but we wouldn't have it any other way. H and I would love to move into our own place, but it's not in the budget at the moment. We coexist so well that I'm afraid once we move, we will miss the noise. H and I found a home we absolutely love, a little out of our price range since we don't have any DP to our name, and it's literally a walk down the street from my parents.

It's tough when you have such a close relationship with them. I'm lucky enough that my H loves my parents like if they were his own (his relationship with his mom and stepdad are hanging by a thread, and his dad died when he was a kid).

  • We are living with my mom right now while our house is being built and sometimes I think I would like to just stay there longer.  I get along really well with my mom and like living with her.  I know DH is ready to leave though.  Not that they don't get along...he just wants our own place again.  So I understand how you feel!

  • Thanks guys! We live about 25 minutes away but in the same town basically. We live rurally so town is a half hour away as well. We go out there every weekend and usually spend Saturday night out there.

@sparklingdiamond my DH thought that he was done and wanted his own space until we moved out. It was nice for a while but now it gets a little lonely.

We have a five year goal to move to the East Coast and I wouldn't be surprised if within a year or two of moving we moved back in there so both parties can save up money for the move especially since we plan on moving together anyway.

  • It's awesome that you have that kind if relationship. My family is all really close, but I think I'd go nuts actually living with them. I need some space and want to feel independent of them. Makes me feel more like a grown up which I still totally don't feel like even with a husband, 2 kids, a house and a career.

I guess it was similar to when you're a kid and 30 seems so old, but then you get there and you're like this isn't at all like I'd imagined it would be....ok I'm just babbling now - haha.

  • I give you guys a lot of credit for being able to live with your parents. I'm pretty sure I'd kill my mother if I had to live with her again.

  • I'm with @ashleymatt1215 I absolutely love my parents, but even when I had to live with them for about 6 months after graduating from college and before our house was finished, I was so ready to have my space again.

My parents have been trying everything to get us to move into the farmhouse I grew up in.  It would mean seeing my dad, mom, and brother on a daily basis, and farm equipment and hired men coming in and out of the property 24/7.  That isn't even enough privacy for me.

Although we've discussed buying a portion of the land and building on it.  My parents would be 1 mile in one direction, and my brother 1 mile in the other. Somehow that's enough privacy, but the house now is smack dab in the middle of the farm operation.  No thank you.

I don't know how you girls do it.

  • I can definitely see the need for privacy! My parents definitely give us privacy and we do the same. The boundaries are clearly set so that helps as well. They treat us like adults but also like their children at the same time. It is a careful balance but it works...if that makes sense.
