Visiting this weekend

Hello fellow Nesties!

I will be visiting your fair city this weekend with my husband and 2 year old son in tow. Any family-friendly events you can recommend?

Re: Visiting this weekend

  • There is a ton to do!  Children's Museum; Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Art, PPG Place (ice skating and Santas).  Which area of the city will you be in?  Will you have transportation?
  • Your son is adorable!  we have lots of family-friendly things to do....like the previous poster asked, what area will you be in?  are you looking for something to take all day?

  • Aww.. thanks,@egpitt22!  I think he's kind of adorable too ;)

We  will arrive at my cousin's apartment on Howe St in the late afternoon (not sure what part of the city that is, sorry).  We should have most of Sunday to do something, and we will have our own car with us.

  • Sounds like you will be in Shadyside - a very central location!

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Art (dinosaurs, gems, sculpture) is very close as well as Phipps Conservatory (Santa, trains and pretty flowers).

There is an indoor play place called My Little Outback in Squirrel Hill if he needs to get out some climbing energy. The libraries in East Liberty and Squirrel Hill both have nice kid sections with some toys.

If it is mild, the zoo is open and the aquarium is great. There are a ton of playgrounds in the area, too. And the Children's Museum on the North Side is one of my favorite destinations with kids.

    Have fun!

  • The museum would be a good way to spend a few hours since the weather looks iffy (cold rain is the worst!)  The dinosaur exhibit was recently revamped and is pretty awesome. But my daughter much preferred the taxidermy hall when she was younger. Lots of large mammals stuffed that you can get pretty close to, much closer than a zoo.  They are also having their big International art exhibit right now.

The childrens museum isn't far from where you are staying either.  Lots of hands on type of things.  It is a lot of fun too! Especially if you are looking for something more interactive. It is a lot of fun.

Enjoy your trip to the city!
  • If you end up at the Carnegie Museum, you could also pop over to the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt's campus to check out the nationality rooms, they're all decked out for the holidays:

Amy, did it reopen somewhere else? The original one closed and I think it's a 6 pack shop now.

You got lots of great suggestions already.

You're definitely staying in Shadyside, which is a nice central location for sightseeing. There are lots of restaurants to get food nearby.

Really? I didn't know that it closed. We used it a lot while I was out of work, but less once we only had weekends for that kind of thing.

  • You can also check out the holiday lights at Kennywood (local amusement park) - they are awesome, and it's cool to ride the merry-go-round to Christmas music and see all the lights whirl by. There are other rides open too - just dress warmly since it's outside, and going to be chilly on Sat evening. Here's a link for more info - http://www.kennywood.com/holidaylights

We're going on Sat night. Have fun no matter what you do!
