They were really sweet! I think I'll feel pretty comfortable with them. The birth center is moving into a newer building next month so I didn't get a tour, but will at my next appointment.

Now for questions... They said my insurance doesn't normally cover more than one US unless there are complications, and the one US is the anatomy/fetal scan at around 20 weeks. Does this seem unusual to anyone else? She said they may cover a dating US since twins run in my family and it's a "risk" factor, so they could enter a diagnosis for insurance to bill. So hopefully I can get at least one early US covered. I'm calling my insurance tomorrow to find out details, but this just really took me off guard. I would like some sort of confirmation that things are going alright, I have way more anxiety than I should and could use the peace of mind (or at least know if anything is wrong).

ETA: silly nest posted it too soon.

  • For my doc they do a dating U/S at about 8 weeks and the A/S around 20
weeks and that's it unless there's reason to do more. I think that's pretty typical though I have seen some insurances that do only cover one U/S.

  • @bobcee - thank you for that info. I guess I really didnt know what to expect!

  • I haven't made it that far yet, but I know I'll have several early ultrasounds with my RE.  They're covered separately as part of infertility not maternity care.  I don't know if that'll affect my decision to do an elective or not later on.

  • Additionally, midwives generally don't rely on or encourage multiple u/s. Often, midwives can determine the things that a u/s can measure by feel, observation, or other tests.

  • I never asked and I've had roughly 8 ultrasounds this pregnancy (which is awesome).  I haven't seen a bill for any of them, so my doc must do a pretty good job of coding.  Though, from what I hear from others that doesn't sound terribly unusual.

  • I actually did have one at 11.5 weeks because the OB couldn't find baby's heartbeat with doppler. It was still early but he wanted to be sure that everything was okay. So that got coded differently and was covered 80%. Otherwise I would not have elected to have any additional ultrasounds.

  • That makes sense about coding things certain ways to get them covered by insurance. Maybe the twin "risk" can allow them to code it in a way to get it covered @alexisanna44

@lilliesandvino that's true, I hope speaking with my insurance and the clinic where I would the US done will explain more than what the midwives would know about my specific insurance. My birth plan aligns with having a midwife much more than having an OB, except for when it comes to ultrasounds I guess

  • My insurance plan would only cover 1 u/s at around 20 weeks under the "maternity" coverage.  But my Dr wanted to do a dating ultrasound, which was covered 80% not as part of the maternity care.

So definitely ask your insurance about it.  They may only cover 1 under the maternity coverage, but you may have to pay a percentage of any additional ones.

  • @brij2006 - ah, that makes sense. Man, insurance is such a pain sometimes. I honestly thought I knew most of it, but hadn't thought about looking into u/s coverage. Thanks for the info!
