Temping Thoughts/Opinions

So I just want some thoughts and opinions on this.

I normally have long cycles, and have only O'd once on my own in the past year.  We are currently TTA, but H is already itching at the seems to start NNT.  He doesn't want me to temp to try and pinpoint O (or lack therof), but agreed that it was okay to do so in order to see if I've O'd at all so I am not constantly taking pregnancy tests once a week after 28 days until 90 days and taking Provera.  So here's my question.  Do you think it would make sense to temp just one day a week to confirm whether I've O'd or not?  That way I can begin taking tests a couple of weeks after I see a temp spike, or expect AF. Am I completely crazy to think this would work?  I just don't want to go back to taking pregnancy tests once a week until AF comes or till 90 days like I did before I started temping. But I also don't want to begin temping again because I will overanalyze every temp and symptom, and will get frustrated that my body isn't Oing.

Or does anyone else have any better ideas?  We know that we will more than likely have to do Clomid again in order to conceive, and that's fine.  But we're also feeling like if my body were to O on its own, that we didn't want to be TTA and miss an opportunity.

Re: Temping Thoughts/Opinions

  • If you don't O on the regular, I wouldn't count on one temp per week. That's JMO though. I know for me, I might have a random low or random high temp during my cycles. It just doesn't seem very reliable to me :( I'd hate for you to have a random high temp and then think you O'd when you really didn't... KWIM? Can you just take the EOD  BDing stance and hope for the best?

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • I don't see how temping once a week could help you pinpoint O at all. You won't see a temp spike if you only temp once every 7 days. I would temp until you O and then put your thermometer in a drawer out of the bedroom to avoid temping after O. That way it is out of sight out of mind for the rest of your cycle.

  • I agree with RAB that temping once a week probably isn't going to show you anything at all, unfortunately.

I get that it would suck to temp every day and see your chart just drag out week after week without changing, but I was in such a zone with temping before, that the alarm going off and taking my temp just became routine and I never thought about having to do it and input the temp.

Since temping will only tell you if you've already O'd, though, you'd still need to be BDing a lot to catch O if/when it does happen (you had a cycle where you O'd on your own, really late, after starting the PCOS diet, right? perhaps you can start following that again and seeing if you keep Oing on your own while you guys are just NNT?).

  • @rockabye H won't go for that. :-(  He gets up at 3am for work, so weekday ST doesn't happen much unless I have a positive OPK or we're on a medicated cycle.

Dang, I was really hoping that the once a week temp would make sense.  Maybe I'll just not temp for a few months to make H happy, then start it again on the next cycle if I have to take Provera.

@luckyangel07 The Dr thinks that one time I O'd on CD72 wasn't a strong enough ovulation to conceive or that I didn't release an egg.  So he's told me that the PCOS diet would likely be a waste of time since my weight isn't a factor.

Weeeeell crap. That sucks. So much for my one and only brilliant (haha) idea. :-<

I hope taking a couple of months off temping doesn't drive you too batty with wondering.

I sure hope so too.  This could get interesting.  At least a year ago I had 2 cycles that were 50 days.  So I was only taking tests for a few weeks before AF came.  Then when I started temping, they became 90+.

  • Honestly, I think if you are TTA or NNT you should do that. You can track cm and stuff if you want to, but I think it would benefit you to just let go for a bit, though. You've been through a lot it's ok to give yourself a real break.

Hey Brij, this is BR/PR, so if you don't want to read, I won't be offended if you ignore.

Continuing... you may be surprised how your body reacts after already being pregnant.  I had super long annovulatory cycles before DS, and ended up seeing a naturopath who was able to regulate my homones and I conceived naturally on CD87 for DS.  After his birth, my cycles have have gotten significantly shorter.

This time, since the D&C, it took 6 weeks to get AF, and it looks like I o'ed on CD21 this first cycle.  For this fact alone I would be inclined to suggest you consider temping just to see what happens.  My naturopath is convinced that pregnancy can have a re-set effect on hormones, so it is not uncommon for someone to need help TTC and then conceive naturally.

All that to say, chart if you want the info and it won't drive you crazy.  As far as once a week goes, it may not work, but you could always try as a middle ground between daily temping and not at all.

    Sorry, this got long!
