Who's watching the Sound of Music (Live!) tonight?

I swear I can't wait for this to be over, due to all of the commercials. Oy.

I'm not sure if we'll watch it, though - all these boys, I'm lucky I get a spot on the couch. To actually get my mitts on the remote control is just short of a miracle!

Re: Who's watching the Sound of Music (Live!) tonight?

  • i may record it and watch it over the weekend with EJ.  She will probably enjoy it (she likes the original) but I can't say I am excited over the concept enough to really watch it myself. And I know K isn't at all interested.
  • Flammable confession - I do not like the Sound of Music.  I do not like the original.  I have no intention to watch a remake.

I'm so conflicted right now.  I mean, I still like you but I don't know if I can handle a blow this low.

  • The DVR is set. I may try to convince the kids to be ready for bed by 8 and let them watch the first 30 minutes instead of reading books. If they want to see the rest, we'll find time this weekend. And if not, I'll watch it alone.

We haven't watched the movie in a while, but H has seen it a number of times and T at least a few. We've also listened to the songs in the car a lot, so I think they'll be interested.

Personally, I'm not excited about Carrie Underwood, but some of my favorite broadway actors are in it (Audra Macdonald, Christian Borle, Laura Benanti) and a CMU student is playing Rolf, so I definitely want to see it!

Thanks for not writing me off.  Sometimes I feel like I'm broken.   I like musicals, why do I hate the Sound of Music?  I WANT to like it and be like everyone else, but I just don't.   I'll blame my mother, because she never made it a yearly tradition back in the day when it was only on tv once a year (like the Wizard of Oz).   It's always the mother's fault!
  • Dare I admit I am not sure I've ever seen the original?!
  • I'm excited about it. I'm not sure I'll get to watch it live, but I have our DVR set for it. I loved the sound of music as a child, it's got a bunch of great actors, and it doesn't sound as though it's an exact clone of the Julie Andrews version. I think this is the play and not the movie, so I shouldn't feel as though I have to compare them :)

  • Yes, Lisa. It's a televised version of the play script and not the movie. I'm sure people who only know the movie version will be caught off guard by some things that are different.

From watching the "making of" special, some of the kids look wonderful!

Amber - I LOVE Broadway, but there are show tunes that I can't stand. I usually have the Sirius/XM broadway station on in the car, but they play songs sometimes that make me turn the channel.

Shenandoah, Best Little Whorehouse, Damn Yankees...to name a few.

    We can't like it all!

  • ME!  I have it DVR'd so won't watch the whole thing but the girls are excited.  We have been playing the music lately but they have never seen the original. I'm excited so many former CLO & Pitt actors are in it!

My grandmother was the one who was really into Sound of Music so I have fond memories of watching it at her house.  Probably while stuffing my face with cookies.

  • Ok, what did everyone think? I think most of you know my sound of music obsession knows no end, but I have never liked the stage show. I knew this going into it, but of course I was watching.

Carrie's acting was just unfortunate. My sister texted me and said if this was a high school musical people would have been blown away by her. Very impressed she tried though.

Overall it wasn't great, but I'm SO glad that NBC decided to do it. Maybe it's because I'm old and a parent now, but I wish there was more family/"event" tv like this. It's very rare all 3 of us can sit down and enjoy a show together without one of us being bored to tears. I surely hope there's more programming like this in the future.

  • I had the last hour on. Cartie's acting was painful. I was wondering why they would use somebody not known for her acting. Sorry singing alone is not enough!!

  • I feel the exact same way you do Sarah.

I'm glad that they did it. I understand casting Carrie, as they wanted a big name to draw people in, but the general public doesn't know amazing Broadway actresses they way they'd know Carrie. I thought Audra did a wonderful job. I also really liked Max and Rolf (Go Pittsburghers/CMU represent :) )

I also really liked that it was family entertainment and that NBC was willing to go out on a limb and spend some money on something that hasn't been done in a long  time. I'm curious to hear how the ratings were.

As a kid, I remember repeatedly watching VHS tapes of the live broadway shows of Mary Martin in Peter Pan and Lesley Ann Warren in Cinderella that were shown on TV in the 50s and 60s. I loved them.

  • I totally agree with you ladies.  Carrie's acting was flat.  I feel bad for her.  She just did not hold her own when it came to the acting.  I really enjoyed the show though.  Although, I must admit I giggled a little seeing vampire Bill singing show tunes.

I am so glad NBC did this and I hope it's just the beginning of quality family entertainment like this.  Not like that weird Lady Gaga/muppet thing last week.  I remember watching tapes of the Mary Martin peter pan as a kid.  I hope they do that one next year.

  • Sarah, I totally agree! I really give the network a lot of credit for trying something new and I hope it leads to more of these types of "events" in the future.

Max Detweiler was OUTSTANDING! I really enjoyed his performance. When he came on screen I was like, "thank goodness, a good actor!".

I give Carrie Underwood a lot of props for trying this. She didn't do a great job, but she's not an actress.

Bill Compton (whatever his real name is) - seriously? He was terrible. And what was with the whisper-singing?!

  •  I watched the first hour with the kids and watched the rest and thought " why am i torturing myself".  I'll watch the girls the movie b/c at least that had a better flow and explanation of what was going on.  I mean when you rely on a 7 yr old to tell you her dad loves you its a bit of a stretch.  I thought that Laura Benanti who play Frau Schrader (sp) was the best.  She really had good expressions on her face and everyone else just seemed flat.   Plus - what was up with all the static?!   And I thought Gretl while cute was pretty flat when she sang.

I agree I was glad they did it and hope it got good reviews b/c they all worked really hard!

  • Haha Vampire Bill seemed an odd choice. I kept waiting for it to turn scary and have vampires all over the place!!

I think his acting was his typical style of acting, which is kind of odd

  • I'm the only person in my office today, and I've spent most of the morning humming and occasionally singing the Lonely Goatherd song to myself.

I hadn't thought of that song or how much I liked it for years, and now it's completely stuck in my head.

  • I didn't watch, but looks like it did well ratings-wise, this is a snippet from entertainment weekly:

NBC’s big winter gamble paid off: The Sound of Music Live! delivered a massive audience Thursday night.

The three-hour performance of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical delivered 18.5 million viewers and a great 4.6 rating among adults 18-49. This is NBC’s biggest Thursday in the adult demo excluding sports since the ER finale in 2009.

  • I agree with all of you, Carrie's "acting" was unfortunate. And though she can hit all of the notes, to be a real musical theater actress, it is imperative that the acting and singing go hand in hand.

I'm only two thirds of the way through it (watched the first 30 minutes with the kids), but there were definitely some bright spots. Audra (Mother Superior), Laura (Elsa) and Christian (Max) we're all FABULOUS. I could watch the three of them all night.

I thought the kids were good given the live circumstances. I bet in a taped version they would be outstanding. Especially Gretl. The Captain seemed nervous at first but was improving as the show went on. I really enjoyed Rolf & Liesl in their number.

Was it just me or was the lighting too dim in most of the wide shots?

  • So I read a couple reviews.  I think some of them are really unfair.  People are complaining that Carrie wasn't Julie Andrews (um, hello, nobody is!)  and that they missed the kids climbing this the trees and running outside.  It was a stage show, not a movie.

  • I watched the first hour and then could not watch Carrie Underwood another minute. I actually felt bad for her. Although my boss said he thought it got better at the end. He said he liked when she went back to the convent.

  • I didn't watch, but all of the people complaining about it on FB didn't seem fair.  It doesn't even make sense to compare Carrie to Julie or the show to the movie.  Ditto lala.  People kept commenting "Carrie Underwood is not Julie Andrews!"...well, not sh*t sherlock!
  • Was it just me or was the lighting too dim in most of the wide shots?

No not just you & in the shot at the end when they were all in nice dresses everything was really rosy pink.  Odd.

I think anyone that thought Carrie's acting was going to be good was setting themselves up to be disappointed.  They clearly wanted her for her ability to sing live and to be able to hit the notes when it counted.

No, Casey and I kept complaining about that too!

Sixteen Going on Seventeen was actually difficult to watch (although superbly acted/sung) - I thought it was a horrible use of the stage. I wanted to reach into the tv and push the trees out of the way. Why would they muddy up the foreground so much? I felt like I had to look around the set to see the actors.

The overall blocking and lighting was not good, imo.

Yes, I felt like the set and staging did a disservice to Rolf and Liesl. I'm all for a good set, but it was too much.
