How to approach job promotion XP

A while back I posted about my horrible job. I put my feelers out for something else and didn't get any bites. But things at my job have improved greatly.

Our "lead" photographer is still not doing his job. My coworker works with him frequently and is subjected to all of the bull shit. She emailed our manager and the manager told her she gave our lead a call. He yelled at our manager over the phone and went off on her.

She had the forsite to keep him until someone else is hired and/or end of the year. That way the rest of us are not overworked.

My question is this: how do I approach my manager for a promotion to lead?

I had asked for less hours before because I was working 40+ hours a week part time (no overtime pay). I was feeling overworked, under appreciated, taken advantage of, etc. My manager and coworker brought up the possibility of me becoming lead to replace who we have now. I declined because I needed the break mentally and emotionally (it was affecting me physically). Now I'm feeling better and would like the position (if she wants to give it to me).

I have no issues at all working full time if I'm hired as full time. And I would also like a pay increase since it does involve more responcability.

I've never been in this position before. Please help.

  • How long ago did you ask to cut back? What makes you think the situation will be different? (are you still underappreciated?)

    As a manager who has had employees cut back on their hours, I would be REALLY hesitant to then turn around and hire them for a full time position with more responsibility. I need someone I can rely on. Those are the objections you will need to overcome with your manager, even if she doesn't come out and ask that's what she will be thinking. 
  • You bring up a good point on the hours/ hiring.

    Communication has gotten better between my manager and I. I don't have most of those feelings/ concerns now since cutting back my hours (and hardly work with the lead who created most of the feelings). After talking with my manager I know she appreciates me along with other coworkers.

    I was working full time as a part time employee. The cut back was mainly me talking about how much I work as a part timer and the person who will be getting fired soon. I work the hours I was hired for now (that's the cut back).

    I'm still doing my job I was hired for and doing it well from my perspective. Im still doing what my manager requests of me and doing what the lead isn't doing (what he should be doing, not me). She's been texting me questions about work today, my day off, that the lead should know the answers to.

    Since I've started working we now have basic office supplies (scissor, stapler, etc.). We also have two properly working cameras, printers, and computers. We have the correct number of batteries and chargers for the cameras & flashes. You get the idea.

    Even if you as a manager would be hesitant, since the "cut" of hours was within the last 6 months, how should I approach this. If I should approach this at all.
  • I am just going to let my manager know that I have been doing much better and am able to (and willing) to work more. I honestly do not mind in the least if my hours stay how they are now and a new lead is brought in as long as the lead is good.
