Liam has had cradle cap off & on since he was a baby, but I can't seem to get rid of what he has right now. it came back full force about 3 months ago, worse than it was even when he was little

I've tried every old wives tale in the book, then we tried head & shoulders, but it's still there!!
He was at the pediatrician earlier this week for a check up, and the dr looked at it and said that if I tried all of those things, the next step would be taking him to see a dermatologist. Just wondering if anyone else had to do this, and what they ended up recommending?
Re: cradle cap-toddler
Madi had this when she was 3 and I can't remember what I did to get rid of. Let me think......
We have been to children's Derm in Wexford for other skin issues. So if you have to go that route you are in great hands. I swear I have never be to an office that even with as busy as they (and obly peds derm from cleveland to Hershey) are gets you in a room and back out quick. I make sure to tell them this on every survey. It takes us longer to get there then we wait in the office.
I feel so bad for him, I mean he doesn't complain about it, but it looks so itchy! And when it flakes out, it's pulling whole chunks of his hair out with it. he's going to go bald at the tender age of 2.5!

My pedi recommended head and shoulder and a "massage" of his scalp with a comb during bath.
I've also used some tea tree oil.

Cori has had this since she was little, and at 5 and 1/2, still does. Neutragena's T-Sal shampoo is the best thing for her. http://www.neutrogena.com/product/t-sal-+therapeutic+shampoo+-+scalp+build-up+control.do?sortby=ourPicks
And try not to pick at it; I know for me, that is very hard, but it's really red and raw under there and like you said, also removes large chunks of hair. But it doesn't seem to bother her (itch wise) though!
