cradle cap-toddler

Liam has had cradle cap off & on since he was a baby, but I can't seem to get rid of what he has right now.  it came back full force about 3 months ago, worse than it was even when he was little :(   I've tried every old wives tale in the book, then we tried head & shoulders, but it's still there!!

He was at the pediatrician earlier this week for a check up, and the dr looked at it and said that if I tried all of those things, the next step would be taking him to see a dermatologist.  Just wondering if anyone else had to do this, and what they ended up recommending?

  • Madi had this when she was 3 and I can't remember what I did to get rid of. Let me think......

We have been to children's Derm in Wexford for other skin issues. So if you have to go that route you are in great hands. I swear I have never be to an office that even with as busy as they (and obly peds derm from cleveland to Hershey) are gets you in a room and back out quick. I make sure to tell them this on every survey. It takes us longer to get there then we wait in the office. :)

  • That's good to know about the office, since that's where we would go!

I feel so bad for him, I mean he doesn't complain about it, but it looks so itchy!  And when it flakes out, it's pulling whole chunks of his hair out with it.  he's going to go bald at the tender age of 2.5!

  • Michael has this same problem. It was bad this summer. It's a little better now.

My pedi recommended head and shoulder and a "massage" of his scalp with a comb during bath.

I've also used some tea tree oil.

  • Maybe it is psoriasis? My bff in high school had it on her scalp only and it was definitely worse in the winter and when we went to the pool a lot.

Have you tried Neutrogena T/Gel shampoo?

  • Kris-I'm not sure, googling images of psoriasis it doesn't look quite that bad.  his are less lesions, more just flakes.  Haven't tried the T/Gel shampoo, but I'm willing to try just about anything!

It might be worth a shot, cheaper and easier than the dermatologist! I will warn you, it does not smell that great but it works. Nathan gets really bad dry skin which means itchy head though no dandruff in the winter and it helps.

My oldest had a cradle cap issue when she was about 2.  We went to Children's derm and got some prescription shampoo.  I did clear up and hasn't come back since.  It's nice to have a children's dermatologist.  They are very nice there.  We are now going there for my youngest daughter who has vitiligo.

The derm also had us use T/Sal shampoo not T/Gel

  • We have had the same issue.  Pedi prescribed a stronger version of Nizoral and that did the trick.  Also, don't let them go to bed with a wet head, it can make it worse.
  • Ditto Rona about the Wexford Derm office.  We have been a patient there for years and I agree that they are wonderful.  We were told to use the T-gel as well for cradle cap.

  • Noah gets really dry in his scalp and the doctor recommended Selsun Blue.  It really did help to clear it up.
  • Cori has had this since she was little, and at 5 and 1/2, still does. Neutragena's T-Sal shampoo is the best thing for her. http://www.neutrogena.com/product/t-sal-+therapeutic+shampoo+-+scalp+build-up+control.do?sortby=ourPicks

And try not to pick at it; I know for me, that is very hard, but it's really red and raw under there and like you said, also removes large chunks of hair. But it doesn't seem to bother her (itch wise) though!
