The Sound of Music discussion (sp)

I ended up missing quite a bit of the first hour (my favorite part) to deal with Wes, but I was just meh on the whole thing.  My mood was soured because Wes puked all over me, himself and the floor so that could really be a big factor.  Carrie was underwhelming, except she really can sing.  Vampire Bill did better than I expected.

I only noticed a few times were the live thing caught up with them.  One was near the end when the Nazi's come to deliver the telegram ordering him to report for duty.

What did you think?

Re: The Sound of Music discussion (sp)

  • I enjoyed it. I watched the whole thing only missing bits and pieces because of Alex. I went in with an open mind and tried to not compare it to the movie.
Overall I think they did a decent job.
  • I only saw about half an hour of it, near the end, but I was underwhelmed.  I was also biased against Carrie Underwood from the start, but putting that aside, I still thought she was pretty bad.
  • I agree that Carrie can sing, but her acting wasn't anything great.  I was impressed with Vampire Bill!  Except I was watching with my sister, lots of drinking and laughing, so every time I saw him I would say "Sookeh" or "What if Captain Von Trapp is a vampire in this version" and several variations of that.

    YES Mother Abbess was awesome!

I went into it knowing 1. The theatrical version is different from the film and 2. OF COURSE no one is ever going to touch Julie Andrews in this role. So I thought it was ok.  I would like to see more productions on television like this.

Also, last night was the first time I saw a preview for Saving Mr. Banks and I cannot wait to see it!

  • I had a moment at the beginning where I was like, "ooh I love her dress!" and then they talked about how ugly it was.

That's awesome! We recorded it, but on the making of special, they were concerned that his voice would change before the production. I'm sure he was stoked about this!

Audra McDonald as the Mother Abbess killed it (in a good way) on Climb E'vry Mountain, which I knew she would and was the reason I watched in the first place.  That lady can SING like an angel.  Laura Benanti was gorgeous as the baroness.  I don't like the part of the baroness in the stage production of SoM as much as I like the character in the movie, but that was not Laura's fault.  She did a great job.  Christian Borle as Max was pretty good, too.  And I liked the girl who played Liesl.  Stephen Moyer actually did okay.  I liked his voice and his look.  But I did not buy the chemistry between the Captain and Maria, though that's mainly Carrie's fault.  In any event, I love musicals and I am glad that NBC attempted this production.  I would love to see more things like this on TV.
Absolutely 100% agree with all of this. Laura and Audra and Christian are amazeballs at anything, and I was stoked when they were casted. I loved Lisel and Kurt - they were spot on. I didn't like Gretel as much. I feel bad saying that because she's a little girl, and has oodles of talent, I just didn't think she was a great casting choice. She yelled everything too much.

I just don't get all the absolute
anger over this production. I had people on my FB feed ready to lynch people. I adore the movie, and, well Julie Andrews, but get a grip!

    1) It's not a remake of the movie. It was a production of the stage Musical. Not the same thing.
    2) No one HAD to watch it, if it's not your thing, just don't watch that channel for the two hours it's on.
    3) How does this production "ruin" the movie? Did the thousands of other Stage Productions ruin the movie, too?
    4) The Musical came first, people.

/rant The outrage was because this
could have possibly been a fun thing to watch if they hadn't cast Carrie Underwood, who can't act to save her life. Musicals typically star actresses who can both sing and act.

  • This was the only thing I've ever seen her do acting-wise. I do believe there is a reason she hasn't pursued it.

Audra and Laura and Christian made up for it. As much as they could.

  • I thought the casting felt off for several of the characters, but they probably had Carrie as Maria to attract a wider range of people to watch the production.

Agreed.  I feel like Stephen Moyer is a pretty big name and he was hardly mentioned in the promos and commercials.

  • I only watched a few minutes of it and was so put off by Carrie's acting and the aesthetic that I turned it off. I tuned back in when Audra sang "Climb Every Mountain", had my Hallelujah moment, and then I switched it off again.

Is it me or did it look like a soap opera? I kept expecting the Quartermaines or the Buchanans to come down the staircase. :-/

Someone on my twitter said it's because it was videotaped (as opposed to...?) on a soundstage and the only other programming that is filmed in the same way is soap operas.

YES! I noticed this too, but I couldn't figure out how to express it - but a soap opera is EXACTLY it.

IMO, Hugh Jackman should have been played the role of Captain.  :D He would have been perfect! And they would have had "the name."
