The Sound of Music discussion (sp)
I ended up missing quite a bit of the first hour (my favorite part) to deal with Wes, but I was just meh on the whole thing. My mood was soured because Wes puked all over me, himself and the floor so that could really be a big factor. Carrie was underwhelming, except she really can sing. Vampire Bill did better than I expected.
I only noticed a few times were the live thing caught up with them. One was near the end when the Nazi's come to deliver the telegram ordering him to report for duty.
What did you think?

Re: The Sound of Music discussion (sp)
I thought Carrie's acting was terrible. My husband said, "Jesus needs to take the wheel on this one!" LOL. And why did she look like Elle Woods at the end?? She smiled at the children about twice in the whole show. Even if I factor in that Julie Andrews OWNED that role and no one will ever replace her and I was biased against Carrie from the start, Carrie still can't act.
Audra McDonald as the Mother Abbess killed it (in a good way) on Climb E'vry Mountain, which I knew she would and was the reason I watched in the first place. That lady can SING like an angel.
Laura Benanti was gorgeous as the baroness. I don't like the part of the baroness in the stage production of SoM as much as I like the character in the movie, but that was not Laura's fault. She did a great job. Christian Borle as Max was pretty good, too. And I liked the girl who played Liesl. Stephen Moyer actually did okay. I liked his voice and his look. But I did not buy the chemistry between the Captain and Maria, though that's mainly Carrie's fault.
In any event, I love musicals and I am glad that NBC attempted this production. I would love to see more things like this on TV.

"People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality."

Absolutely 100% agree with all of this. Laura and Audra and Christian are amazeballs at anything, and I was stoked when they were casted. I loved Lisel and Kurt - they were spot on. I didn't like Gretel as much. I feel bad saying that because she's a little girl, and has oodles of talent, I just didn't think she was a great casting choice. She yelled everything too much.
I just don't get all the absolute anger over this production. I had people on my FB feed ready to lynch people. I adore the movie, and, well Julie Andrews, but get a grip!

1) It's not a remake of the movie. It was a production of the stage Musical. Not the same thing. 2) No one HAD to watch it, if it's not your thing, just don't watch that channel for the two hours it's on. 3) How does this production "ruin" the movie? Did the thousands of other Stage Productions ruin the movie, too?4) The Musical came first, people.
/rant The outrage was because this could have possibly been a fun thing to watch if they hadn't cast Carrie Underwood, who can't act to save her life. Musicals typically star actresses who can both sing and act.

Audra and Laura and Christian made up for it. As much as they could.

IMO, Hugh Jackman should have been played the role of Captain.
He would have been perfect! And they would have had "the name."
