Book idea for 21 year old guy?

I need a gift idea for my 21 year old cousin.  He's starting grad school in the spring in nuclear engineering (or something ridiculously smart like that).  He enjoys reading.  I got him The Hunger Games trilogy a few years ago.  I thought about doing Divergent this year but I don't know... Any other ideas?

DH suggested this.  He read it but I haven't.  Would he get it being born in 1992?

I mean, I'm not old, but this makes me feel old that someone born in the 90's can drink and study nuclear engineering.

I don't think it will be beyond him to read RPO.

He was born two years after I graduated high school.  *sigh*  I think I'm too old for the Internet sometimes.

He might not appreciate it as much as someone who lived through the 80s or miss some of the references, but it's still a great book.  It is dystopian and I think it would appeal to his engineering side.

  • If he hasn't already read them I would suggest LOTR or Game of Thrones.

  • Does he like non-fiction?  Jon Krakauer's books have been successful with my brother.

  • DH is 24. He likes Stephen King and Joe Hill.

  • The Dark Tower series by Stephen King?
  • I second Ready Player One. It's got a lot of geek culture stuff too, not just 80s. Lexicon by Max Barry might be a good one too. It's very smart (but also funny and accessible) sci-fi. Some others to consider: Name of the Wind,  Warm Bodies, or Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore.

  • Game of Thrones!

I'm going to assume your cousin is Sheldon Cooper ;)

If he hasn't already read it, and he likes graphic novels, maybe Watchmen?

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card?
    Inferno by Dan Brown?
The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson?
Essays in Humanism by Albert Einstein?

  • Do you know much what else he's read?

My H is not 21, but he enjoys the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child.  His favorite books are written by Robert Jordan - a series of Conan books & the Wheel of Time.  My H read GOT, and while he liked the knights and so forth, he said it depressed the crap out of him. After that certain main character dies in book 1, my H almost quit altogether. My H also enjoys that Robin Hood time period, so he really likes Bernard Cromwell and enjoyed his entire Grail Quest series, as well as Agincourt. H read Hunger Games but didn't really enjoy it. He refused Divergent. Aside from those, H has a few Stephen King and Dean Koontz.
