AW: DIY project

I've been giving our master bathroom a facelift since October (I move slowly) and finally got around to framing the mirror tonight. I love how it turned out.

  • Stunning! I'm totally going to do this with our upstairs bathroom now- thanks for the idea. My mom taught me how to tile and now I'm an addict. I did a step in our garage, our back splash, a few frames and a small wall in the kitchen.

  • @sgautschi I used instructions from a Home Depot workshop that I found online, http://ext.homedepot.com/community/blog/wp-content/wpuploads/Tiled-Mirror-Do-It-Herself-Project-from-Home-Depot.pdf

@littlelady77 We did our kitchen backsplash not too long ago and I'm addicted to tiling now too!  I did the shortcut with this one and used the SimpleMat to attach them.  It's such a small amount of tile, I thought I'd give that a try rather than another adhesive.  I guess we'll see how it holds up.

Beautiful! I love it! Nice job, Looney!

ETA: After looking at the directions, I'm bookmarking them. This looks so simple and easy if you follow the directions! I'd love to do this in our downstairs half bath!

  • That's fantastic! I'd never have believed it's so easy, but the instructions seem pretty straightforward. Great job!

  • @LooneyLife - My DH LOVED your project! How long did it take you to do from start to finish? Are you fairly handy or are you like me (limited to hanging pictures and curtains)? Did you find the project easy, medium, or hard? We're thinking of copycatting/tackling it next weekend or the weekend before Christmas.

We're fairly handy with small projects.  This was really easy though if you use the SimpleMat.  You just need to be able to measure and cut.  It took less than an hour to get the tiles up.  It did take a few hours to grout though.  I took a lot of breaks in there, so it's possible to do it in less time I'm sure.

  • Looks great, love that tile! I am the resident tiler in our home (a shower surround, two floors, a backsplash) and have been so curious about that simplemat because its a pain to get the mortar out for little projects. Let me know how it holds up in the humidity of the bathroom, although I'm sure it will be fine because it must have to cure, right?

I'm curious to see how it holds up as well.  I don't know how I'd feel about using it for a large scale project or larger tiles, but for something small like this I think it'll work well.  There's no curing time for the mat itself but you do have to grout within 24 hrs for the tiles to really set firmly.  I grouted immediately after putting the tiles up.  We didn't shower in that bathroom today, but will tomorrow.  We use our bathroom fan religiously when showering (because we have no window) so it never really gets very humid/steamy.
