Change Jar

Do you have one in your home?

What does the change go toward? Spending money on vacation? Christmas? Lunch Money?

Just bored and curious. Wanted to see if anyone used theirs in a way I hadn't thought of. Thanks for playing along :)

Re: Change Jar

  • Do you have one in your home?
Yes, I have a small piggy bank.

I don't really have a use. Sometimes I'll snag money out for parking or laundry, but that's rare. It mostly just sits there until the bank gets full and I just put it in savings.

  • We have a change jar, but it rarely ever gets added to since we use debit cards for most purchases and don't have much change.

It's mostly there to toss change into for vacation, but there's probably less than $40 in it.

  • We each have our own to save and spend as we wish. He is saving for a new video game that comes out this summer and I am saving for a donation of 250 dollars to get my name on brick for the new pathway that is being built here on campus. I have until Summer 2015 to get the money in and I am hoping to do it all in change. Haha.

  • We have a piggy bank. We also rarely put change in it since we use cards for most of our purchases, so we never have cash. And then when we do need change (usually parking meters) we'll get it out of the piggy bank, so all that's left is nickels and pennies, and not very many at that. I suppose some day when it fills up or we feel like it, we'll just deposit the $2.50 it probably will amount to.

Ooooo! I love this idea! I have my name on a brick at my high school and want to get one here, we can do it at the Football Stadium, Coliseum or Alumni Center...haven't decided which yet(leaning towards the football stadium) but that's a great way to save for it!

  • I don't have one.  H had a quarter jar for awhile to use for toll roads in Atlanta when he lived there, but we have since deposited them (and we just go through the slower credit card line on the rare times we drive through it now).

Yeah everything goes on credit cards for me.  I find it a lot easier to budget and track my spending that way because the exact amount is always listed on my statement.  Do I feel silly swiping a credit card for an $0.85 candy bar?  Sure.  But at least I haven't forgotten about it when budgeting at the end of the month.

  • I have two change cups.  One for pennies and the other for the large change.  The larger change tends to go to beats with MW's family or when I am running low on cash for soda at work.

When we do roll the change it can go to various activities including to supplement our grocery bill especially if I go to the local Farmer's Market.  I have in the past been able to roll over $40 in one sitting.  We have also used this money in the past to help set up various accounts.

I use cash for our grocery shopping and my gas so I can generate decent amount of change quickly.  I don't dare use debit when grocery shopping since I tend to over spend by at least $20 a visit.
  • Since we use debit/credit, we rarely have cash. If I find cash in DH's pockets then it goes in our son's piggy bank. The first year was the most, then I think DH caught on (he knew I was doing it, but I guess he just remembered to hang on to it lol).

  • Yep, we have a change jar. Right now the money is going towards our LO's saving's account. We've always just used the money for whatever, but now it seems like every little bit we can save for him is going to help out in the long run for college, car or whatever.

  • We have a change JUG. Its a water cooler jug that we started when we first started dating. We emptied it after only a few months of dating to go see my brother in NC but since then, we have kept filling it. We then said we would use it for a honeymoon, but then that didn't happen, and it just keeps building. Now I think about saving it for a future home related expense, but then..... Maybe not.
  • yes, I have one and DD has one.  Her's goes into her savings and I just cash mine in and keep in my pocket as cash for small purchases.

  • Before we were married, DH and I were saving up all our coins for wedding related stuff. Now that we are married, and I budget so much better now, DH is really the only one to have change since he takes out his weekly allowance in cash. Any change he does bring home, I put in a change jar. Now we are just saving for a whatever we feel like. It's pretty much going to sit there, maybe it will go to our house fund.

  • We have one that we usually use for small purchases weather it be take out dinner, printer ink or whatever. I was hoping to put it towards H's car payment but that never happens.
  • We have a small change jar but it's mostly just filled with pennies. Quarters are precious to us because we have coin-op laundry and dimes and nickels go to parking or tolls. Like other PPs, we mostly use our debit cards so we don't rack up a lot of extra cash.

  • We have piggy banks (they're actually elephants) for the girls- we put our change in there and when they're older, we'll roll it and put 1/2 in their bank accounts and let them spend the other half (if they want to!). Right now, we put any $ they get for birthdays/holidays into their bank accounts, but we're going to start doing 1/2 save and 1/2 spend once they get older and want to buy things.

  • Yes, I have it really because the boys drop their change all over their rooms when it falls out of their pockets or when I am doing laundry I have one by the washer when I check their pockets right before I throw their pants and shorts in.

I am the one who cashes it in and splits the money between them
  • We have a small jar that we used to add to more when we were college students. I think we counted it all out about a year ago and had something like $400 in there. We used the money to go on a nice little weekend getaway. We still have one in our closet, but we rarely use cash nowadays so I'd be surprised if there's more than $10 in there. I do keep a jar in the laundry room to collect all the random things I find in DH's work pants--I've got quite a selection of Sharpies, pens, screws and other random little things, lol.
  • This is an old resurrected post...but here's what I do or came up with...

I got a very small(size of a grapefruitish) piggy bank that I drop my change into. I do the envelope system so am basically cash only at this point so always have extra change laying around. When the bank gets full I take the change to the bank and deposit it. Right now into the account my snowball is coming out of but soon that will be changing over to savings. It's been working out pretty well. The last time I took it in I think there was right around $20 in there.

I do try to use exact change when I'm out and about though a la old lady, but there is always some left over at the end of the day.

  • Despite the fact that I have a few piggy banks because I love piggy banks and think they are cute, we actually put our change in a hard plastic cup.  I actually hate change, except quarters.  I continually put change in the cup just to get it out of my wallet.

Although I pay for most things with cash, I do a pretty good job of keeping change minimized by paying with exact change when I can.  My guilty secret?  I'll even give enough change to "quarter up" if I don't have enough for all of the exact change.

My husband gets a kick out of cashing in our cups every few years and just uses it for fun money.  There usually isn't more than $60-$80.  He is welcome to all of it as long as he takes it to the bank.  I don't want any part of that mess, lol.
