DMV (DE)

I have to renew my car's registration this week and it needs to be inspected as well.  I've never had to do this before, so can anyone tell me how it works?  Do you have to go inside first?  Do you stay in your car during the test?

Re: DMV (DE)

  • I know you stay in the car.  You drive it through and they ask you to do things like lights, wipers and raise the hood.  I think you can do everything in the car.  DH just went through a few months ok.  I'll check with him when he comes in.  Just make sure you have the right form of payment.  I think you need cash or check

  • Oh, good to know.  I thought the inspection was free, haha.

LOL...something free with the government??  good one.  ;)

    I think DH paid $35?

  • I think they may actually take cards now...but you may wanna double check.

Well the inspection is free, so say something is wrong with your car and it doesn't pass you don't have to pay.  It's renewing your registration that you're actually paying for.  You definitely stay in the car the whole time and you don't have to go inside first.  You just go through the inspection lane and then just pay at a drive through window.  If all you're doing is inspection/renewal you don't have to go inside at all.

  • Get it inspected and THEN go inside. I did it wrong the first time and it was a HUGE hassle.
  • Thanks, ladies!

    I haven't either!

  • I did it!  It took less than an hour to drive there (the New Castle branch), get inspected, renew my registration, and drive home.  Unfortunately, I did not get to take advantage of the "drive thru" service because I misread a sign and just went the traditional route, but oh well.  They do take credit, btw.

    I'm feeling quite accomplished.
  • Side note - They had a sign up that instructed you to turn your radio to an AM station...and it was definitely a Hispanic music station.
