XP: east coasters help!

edited December 2013 in Getting Pregnant
So I'm sitting between a rock and a hard place. The storm is supposed to blow in here (Rome, ny) around 6pm tonight and stay for like 24 hours potentially giving us several inches of snow. My fight is supposed to leave tomorrow at 3pm. So my options are this: 1. Drive up this afternoon and stay in the airport hotel and hope my flight doesn't get cancelled. 2. Stay the night, hope the storm isn't as bad as they think and drive up tomorrow or 3. Stay here because we can assume my fight will be cancelled and hope I make it out before Friday not knowing what the roads will be like. I realize you can't tell the future, but maybe you girls have an idea of how often the storms really cause cancelled flights out here? If I didn't have a Christmas party at MY house on Saturday for 60 people I wouldn't even care about a delay, but I DO, so I'm kinda flipping out a little right now. Any thoughts are appreciated! Sorry, I'm flying out of Syracuse, into North Carolina, onto Phoenix.

Re: XP: east coasters help!

  • Which airport are you flying out of? That can make a huge difference on delays/cancellations. Also, where are you flying to, is it anywhere near any other storms?

I'm getting hit with the storm now and it's really heavy and really wet snow.  I tried to get into work today and ended up having to turn around and go back home because the roads were so bad.  It does seem like a quick moving storm though so if flights are delayed I wouldn't think it'd be for very long.

ETA:  I'm not sure what it's calling for in NY though so my input might not make a bit of difference coming from MD.

  • Smack in the middle of NY you could get hammered, or it could be minimal.

The info on Weather.com video I just checked out show the storm moving through NY state during the day today and clearing out this evening.

I'd probably stay put for now and wait to see how things look in the morning. If the airports have given no info on cancellations at that point, I'd get yourselves out of the house sooner rather than later to give plenty of extra drive time (it took me 3 times as long to go somewhere on Sunday as it normally would). How long should the drive be from where you are to the airport?

  • It depends on where you're flying to and where the plane flight crew is coming from.  Since the rest of the country is still trying to recover from the past weekend's mess and the DC area has a lot of cancellations and delays because of this mess, I would call your airline before even thinking of leaving for the airport.  You may run into a situation where the plane is available and ready, but the flight crew is stuck in another airport.

    Good luck!

  • I am a little north of NYC but our snow is pretty heavy now and supposed to die down by tonight. But Syracuse is VERY different from my part of NY. Hopefully by tomorrow everything will be cleared up!
