Kids and tangled hair

Anybody try any of the "special" brushes like the wet brush or knot genie to help with tangled hair?

Dd is determined to grow her hair out like Rapunzel, ha! So the issue keeps getting worse. She has very fine hair and it gets so tangled! Then she is so upset when I brush. I've tried using sprays which work ok but she actually isn't a big fan of spraying either.

So I was looking at some of special brushes and wondering if they really help any. Or any other advice?

Re: Kids and tangled hair

  • I got EJ one of these brushes

after she started reciting the Michelle Mercier detangler brush infomercial to me and a friend suggested the goody one.  She also has fine hair that tangles easy especilly once it is past her shoulders.  I prefer keeping her hair in a bob, but she likes it a little longer.  SO I try to get her to use real conditioner in the bath, which helps, and spray when she brushes her hair.  This brush allows her to do it herself and to do a good job of it.  I was surprised at how much more she tolerates it over other brushes with her tangles. So it works for us.
  • We had a special comb that was supposed to be good for tangles. It did an okay job of getting the big tangles, but I still had to go through H's hair with a brush after to get the hair to look nice.

We've had the best luck with the sprays and with teaching her to brush her own hair. She doesn't do an amazing job, but she at least gets some of the tangles out so there is less for me to do.

  • I've heard people swear by the "wet brush" and my sister used a brush on her daughter's hair that actually has leave in conditioner in the brush and you can refill it when it runs out.  She said it works really well but I'm not sure of the exact name or where she got it from.  Elsey still has fine short baby hair and it's already tangled constantly so I know I'm in trouble with her.

  • my hairdresser suggested a wet brush & I got one for the girls (amazon < $10) and it worked really well.  And its not just for wet hair which one might think :)

I got another one though not specifically marked as a wet brush at walgreens a few weeks back and it works just as well.

We usually don't need to use detangler spray anymore

  • I might need to look into this wet brush too.  DD announced last night that she needs her hair long enough for people to climb up it.

If brushing hurts, I can't imagine having someone climb up your hair will feel good...I often thought this about Rapunzel.

Haha! Dd says she wants hair long enough to go to the floor! Rapunzel is really trouble for all us!

I keep trying to convince her to cut it some. It looked so much better when it was like shoulder length. Every time she complains about being brushed I remind her we could cut it. Nope!

  • Im glad to hear these brushes work. I'm going to have to check them out. I think I may need to look for a real conditioner for her and maybe just put it in a different bottle. Ha! She has definite preferences about what we use based on the bottle

Same here!  Her hair is so baby fine.  It looks so stringy long.  Can't there be a princess with a nice stylish bob?

Even Rapunzel cut her hair! You think that would help!!!

It drives me so nuts too because she goes through phases of not wanting anything in her hair. So it's constantly just hanging in her face. Then it gets all in her food, etc!
