QOTD 12/11

Time for the great Christmas stocking debate: open them before presents or after?

  • After here--it's like a fun little treat afterwards.  My mom always filled them with toiletries (that was kind of boring as a kid, but awesome as an adult--free toothpaste, what what!) and candy, and now I also get lipsticks and stuff :)

  • Idk, we didn't have stockings growing up.  I started the tradition for H and me, but before that's the only presents we had so it was first and last.

Last year, MIL had stockings for the kids and it was first.  But I like Evan's idea of it being last with all the little goodies.... um... guess I should decide!

  • Presents are on Christmas Eve and stockings are first thing Christmas morning.  DH was really reluctant to this tradition, but he's coming around to it now.
  • Stockings before presents. Both on Christmas day. I have no idea what H did with his family, be he is usually so easy going that he just goes along with what we do in my family.

  • We always did stockings first thing on Christmas morning

  • I'm glad this is the QOTD.  We've never done stockings so I want to start this year.  I told H that I got him a couple stocking stuffers and he was surprised.  I guess I'll see if he goes along with it or not.

Question: do you wrap the items that go in the stocking stuffers or do you just put them in their last minute?  I know my H and he will for sure peak, so I am leaning towards wrapping them up in tissue paper or something.

  • We never wrap stocking stuffers. When I was a kid (I was such a snoop!), my mom would hide the bag of stocking stuffers. She'd fill my stocking either after I went to bed, or before I got up Christmas morning. Now, if H and I do stockings, we just hide the stuff until we can secretly fill them on Christmas morning.

  • I never wrap them, here is what I got DH for his last year:
    -a tie
-a bag of hersheys mini bars
    -deodorant
    -razors
    -socks
    -boxer briefs
    -candy canes
-a navel orange and walnut in the toe of the stocking (for good luck!  my mom always did that)

  • We always did stockings first but on Christmas morning.

  • First thing. As kids, we were allowed to open our stockings whenever we got up. I think my parents said that so they could buy themselves some extra time before we pounced on them. They are always full of socks, toiletries and lottery tickets. I love stockings.

Yes, this exactly! I remember opening my stocking while my mom had her coffee LOL. I think that doing stockings first gave her a chance to get some caffeine because I'm sure that I woke her up at an obnoxious hour on Christmas morning!

  • We really didn't do the stocking thing growing up. My husband's family does it. We usually did it either after presents or during. Usually it just became stuff getting tossed at whoever had their name on it.

  • I didn't know this was a debate...people open them after?! I have never heard of this! It's always before...like a present appatizer! It's the first thing you see when you come down stairs, so it's the first thing opened in our families!

  • I only wrap something in the stocking if it is extra special.

We fill each other's stockings right before bed on Christmas Eve.

Christmas morning we wake up, eat breakfast, open gifts, open stockings... in that order.

Even growing up at my parents, breakfast was always before presents. Maybe that is why I always want to wait to open all my presents?

  • Growing up, we had stockings until I was about 6 or so.  I barely remember them and I don't remember when we opened them.  I think I got things like Silly Putty in my stocking.

H's family is big into stockings.  They normally open them on Christmas morning, but H and I go for Christmas Eve so we get to open them gradually throughout the day.  H's parents put candy and scratch offs in them.

Here, I don't remember when we open stockings, I think first.  I always put Lindt Lindor Peanut Butter truffles in H's because they're his favorite.  I also put some small things in them.  Last year I put a wireless connector for his Xbox 360 in there.  I haven't thought of what else I will put in his stocking this year.
  • We always did them before!! Like a couple of other girls, we were allowed to check them out first thing, give my parents the chance to eat breakfast, get coffee, etc. Our stuff has never been wrapped. They hung empty on the fireplace until Christmas Eve. My parents would fill them and hang them on our beds as we slept. Stockings were also from "Santa". I loved it. We'd get a movie, candy, a book, little stuff like that.

Ha same here! My patents would say, you can grab your stockings and go into your sister's room.....great until I was a teenager and wanted to sleep in too!

We always opened (and still do) them first.

  • We always did them after at my house, and still do when we go down to my parents! In our house we do them after as well.
