WIJFR: The Sign of Seven Trilogy by NR (ns)

I was going to do a WIJFR post for Blood Brothers (book one) for an FBC task, but I thought it would be best to wait and do a post about the whole trilogy.

OMG why didn't I read this sooner? Why? I think it was @RevJen that I saw posting about them recently. Did you recently read them too?

So the trilogy itself is about three boys who perform a blood brothers ritual on their tenth birthday. Their ritual released a demon and they are the ones destined to destroy it. Every seven years (the Seven) on their birthday, the demon comes out to play by terrorizing their town. They've never been able to defeat it, rather, they spend the week of the Seven battling it and trying to save the townspeople. No one in the town realizes what's going on, they seem to forget about the crazy/violence that goes on that week. This is their 31st birthday year and three women come to the town, all drawn in for separate reasons. They seem to be connected to the town and the curse on it. They all have specific gifts to help them fight the demon. The trilogy itself has many spooky/scary moments, plenty of LOLs because NR writes the best male characters, and lots of sexy/romantic scenes as well.

Book 1: Blood Brothers 4.5 stars
This book is about Quinn and Cal. They have the sweetest romance, but not in an overly cheesy way. It was a slow fall in love. Also, they are great together. They are both funny and just...I can't explain. Just a good fit. I was so creeped out during a few scenes, especially since I do my reading alone at night after DH goes to sleep. I don't want to give any spoilers, but if you've read this one, I'm talking especially about the scene with Quinn in the hotel room at night. The window. Etc. I can pm specifics. Quinn seems most open to all the possibilities of what is going on, since she is a paranormal researcher/author.

Book 2: The Hollow 4.5 stars
This book focuses on Layla and Fox. Mmmm Fox. I'm a little jealous of not sure about Layla. She's very analytical and a little off-putting, to me. She is hesitant to use her gifts and Fox has to encourage her. Layla has never met any of these people until now so she's feeling a little like the outsider pulled in. Blah blah blah. What's really important here is Fox is HOT.

Book 3: The Pagan Stone 5 stars
This final book focuses on Cybil and Gage. Gage is hilarious throughout the trilogy. He's very rough around the edges, a world traveler/gambler, son of an abusive drunk. He has such a deep well of anger, but he's also very smart (and sweet when he lets it show) and can cut right through the b.s. and get to the point. Cybil is awesome. Very tough, and she goes through hell in this book. (Figuratively) It's a great end to the trilogy, though I wish the epilogue had had a little more to it. I also got a little teary at the end, because it's me and I'm a sap.

If you haven't read this trilogy yet, read it! You won't be disappointed.

  • I'm rereading this series right now. Of course Overdrive had the first two ready to read and now I'm waiting in the third. Not cool. Can't wait to get back to Gage and Cybil. Love these guys.
  • I listened to these around Halloween and loved them!  I was leery about the whole demon thing but NR did a great job making it seem real.

  • I read this series as it was released and I remember being SO HOOKED that I bundled up the then toddler aged princess for a late night trip to Target and made one of the sales associates go in the back and search for The Pagan Stone right after I finished The Hollow.

I haven't reread it since then but I might need to make it a priority!

  • I read this based on the good reviews around here and I was so scared of that demon.  The hotel scene made me scared to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night in my own house!  But I agree, great series.

That scene is exactly what I was talking about in my OP. I was so freaked out that I stayed up reading so that I didn't have to turn the light off and go to bed lol.

  • thanks for this recommendation! I'm always overwhelmed when I look for Nora Roberts stuff because so much of it is part of a series, that I never know where to start. This series sounds great. I just put the first one on hold at my library. :)
  • I'm the odd man out.  It was one of my least favorite series by her.

You can always ask us.  I think between all of us here, we've read her entire catalog.

  • I have, a couple times. That's the embarrassing part. Hah! Then I go to my library's catalog with a bunch of suggestions and I can't find anything available that's the first in a series, blah blah blah.

I did get one great rec out of you guys though that actually worked. Three sisters trilogy, i think it was called? Three women (not biological sisters though, so maybe I have the name wrong), on an island somewhere up in the northeast, magic. It was awesome.
  • Three Sisters Island trilogy is one of my all time favorites from her.  I found out a couple of months ago that there used to be a Three Sisters lighthouse on the coast of MA in the 1800s.  I have a picture of the map where I saw it.

  • I've got a set of MMPs that I'm planning to part with.  If anyone is interested, PM me.
