Accupuncture?

Hi Ladies,

In reading many of your stories in the thread started by IRLV (thank you for that by the way!), I noticed that several of you have tried out accupuncture. I would love to hear more about that from those of you who have used this. Also, I know that cost will vary depending on where you live, but if you could also give me an idea of that per session.

Thanks!

Re: Accupuncture?

  • I tried acupuncture with our IVF cycle. I really enjoyed it. Even if it wasn't what made the difference, it was relaxing and made me feel like I was doing something to help our chances. My biggest piece of advice is to find someone who specializes in fertility treatments. As far as cost, mine was actually covered by my insurance. So I just had my copay each time.

    ...hello out there!

  • Like IWTL said find someone who specializes in fertility. My first acu said she did but really didn't help much. My second practices exclusively with fertility clients and was amazing. I found the sessions very relaxing and if you're worried about the needles they don't hurt at all, you barely feel them. I can't help but think/feel that it helped to regulate my cycles. I also found it very supportive as I was going through 3T. I never did IVF but there is a lot of great information out there about it helping.

My sessions were $90 each and I went once a week (there was a package purchase deal with my clinic to decrease that cost but I didn't take advantage of it). On top of that I purchased a lot of supplements that were recommended for myself and DH.

  • I found a person who specialized in fertility and started going to her in January of this year.  I really credit her with helping to regulate my cycles.  I went from having no cycles on my own to longer cycles to fairly consistent shorter cycles.  All while going just once a week to her.  I also did do a couple of cycles with herbs, but then ended up stopping those.  Mine charges I think $70 a session, but I was able to take advantage of a grant program they had that made everything half cost for me.  It really helped me out!

I tried it for my most recent IVF cycle. It did nothing for me and I won't do it again. I didn't even find it relaxing.

There are others who swear by it though.

Mine was $100-ish a session plus a tip. The acu came with me to my transfer and did it before and after. It was $250 to have her for the whole morning. She did specialize in fertility and was a referral from my RE's office.

  • I did it. I also went to a practitioner who specialized in fertility, which I would highly recommend. It did help me relax, but unfortunately I was still not able to have a successful pregnancy. Other people here have had success though. I really liked my acu and he helped talk me through some things that MDs kind of glossed over. I would definitely recommend it.

We were fortunate that insurance covered mine and I only had to pay $15/session.

  • I love acupuncture.  I have been going weekly since June (after our failed IVF) to someone that specializes in fertility acupuncture.  I truly believe it's the reason for the difference in embryo quality between our first and second cycles.  I also find it relaxing and it's nice to have another person to talk to about what's going on.

My acu recommends starting treatment at least 2-3 months prior to starting any ART, and receiving treatment once a week, but acknowledged that cost is prohibitive for some people.

Our sessions are $85 for 1 hour.  Although, my new insurance covers acupuncture for a $15 copay, so I'm looking forward to that.

Thank you ladies for all your input. I'm concerned this May be cost-prohibitive for us to go weekly, since we're trying to pay down debt and save up for IVF. We may do a consult at least though to get a better idea of the costs by us.

ILRV - Sorry that it didn't work for you! Hoping for the best for you in the new year!

  • I have been going since October. I go twice a week for 45 minutes. My acu has many fertility patients. In fact, there is an entire bulletin board in the waiting room devoted to baby pictures and testimonials. There's also a large photo album with pictures and testimonials.

Most of the needles are painless. Some spots are "hot" for me, but the pain goes away pretty quickly. I enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, and I know there are many women who have done IVF who swear by acupuncture. I am still stimming and will know more about the results of everything in a few more days.

My cost was $75 for the initial visit and $50 each visit.
