I have a small oak book shelf I want to paint and use in the nursery. The oak has a layer of clear coat on it. Does anyone know if I need to sand it first and what paint to use?

  • Yes, sanding it will make the paint stay on better. Then you should be able to use just about any paint.

  • H used to work in the paint department at Lowe's and said to use an enamel style paint (rustoleum - they make a non oil based) and to sand it first. My dad always wiped the piece down with rubbing alcohol before painting.

  • You can use Annie Sloan, check it out, you'll have to do zero prep work. However, it's 38$ a qt.

I totally agree with this. I've painted many pieces and now that I use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, I'll never go back. No prep, 2 coats of paint and then a coat of her wax and it will look amazing and hold up great. It sticks to almost anything.

  • You will want to sand it first to rough up the top coat, then the paint should stick.  I've also had luck with rustoleum paint, and then sometimes I will finish it with a coat of polyurethane if I feel it needs some more protection.

@Saisongbird I ended up sanding it by hand (pain), wiped it down with rubbing alcohol and I got Zinsser stain cover primer. I did 2 coats of that and a coat of white wood finish (spay paint) and of course the stencil and orange. It took a few hours but luckily we had some sun so it wasn't too bad. It's so cute in the nursery!
