Receiving books as gifts from non-readers.

Does it make you nervous to receive books as a gift from people you know are non-readers or don't know your taste in reading material?  For me it does a little because then I feel obligated to read whatever it is, even if it is not something I would typically read or if it's a book on a topic in which I have zero interest (right wing politics, Duck Dynasty, etc).  My mom reads things like Amish fiction and I fear she may have given me one for my birthday.  Ick.  ;)  It kind of reminds me of how people who don't eat sushi love to give sushi kits to their friends that do because they just don't realize the cost and labor that goes into homemade sushi makes it wildly impractical.  Thoughts (not about sushi, about books)?

And on a semi-related note, have you seen the LL Bean commercial where the gift being given is wrapped so that you know exactly what it is (bicycle, skis, etc.)?  Books are like that.  You always know a book by feel through the wrapping paper.  Hence the above discussion.  :D

Re: Receiving books as gifts from non-readers.

  • I'm totally with you. I do not want other people picking out my books, for two reasons. 1) They rarely know what I like to read and pick out books I would never choose. 2) If it is something I would read, I most likely already own it because I have no self-control with books.

I do appreciate the thought because people know I love reading. But no. Give me gift cards lol.

I do give specific book ideas to people who ask for them.

  • I've gotten the sushi kit.  I've also gotten a yoga kit from someone because I take yoga classes.  Because apparently I wouldn't already have a yoga mat.  I try really hard not to exchange gifts with people who don't know me well enough to be able to look up my Amazon wish list.

But I'm one of those girls who likes pretty much anything shiny, so I really raise my eyebrows at anyone who says I'm hard to shop for.  A pair of silver studs would make me happy, and be something I'd use all the time.

  • I hear you.  My extended step family is very religious and they know I love to read.  So every year for Christmas I would get a new christian fiction novel as a gift when I was growing up.   I don't have anything against the genre, it's just not one that I would generally read on my own.  I read all the books though.

  • I rarely get books as gifts. I can only remember four in my lifetime. My son hit it out of the park a few years ago when he bought me The Help when it was first released and became a hit. He told me later he'd scanned my bookcases to see what type of books and authors I had then went to the bookstore. Taking the time and picking on his own was pretty special.

My mother, on the other hand, last year gave me Steve Jobs book. If she knew ME she'd know I have zero interest in him or Apple. So I suppose I shouldn't complain.

@Pebble_Cafe for the parenting win!  What a conscientious child you've raised.  I love it.

  • My bookshelves are lined with books my parents have given me that I doubt I'll ever read. When I have to cut back my collection, I do occasionally give away gifted books that I've never read, because I know I never will.

Haha I *just* gave two of my friends books (they are both fairly big readers) and their eyes lit up when I handed them their present and they both go "It's a book!!!". Luckily neither had read the book I gave them and they both seemed genuinely excited which made me really happy :) I agonize forever over what books to buy friends if I'm not working off a specific list!
  • I def. don't like when people blindly gift me books if they don't know my taste. My best friend always gets me chick lit books, and my mother self-help books, I hate them. So now, if I get a book I don't like I exchange it, I don't need to suffer through books that don't interest me.

PS. We make our own sushi all the time, so I like the sushi kit!
  • My SIL gave her 85 year old grandmother who is an avid reader, a copy of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for Christmas a couple of years ago. She had mentioned that she was thinking about buying it to me and I told her I didn't think it would be something her grandma would enjoy. She bought them anyway because she said they were popular. Needless to say grandma didnt care for them. SIL told me she didnt know why because it was a mystery which is the genre she likes. I said I hope you realize you gave your grandmother a book with a graphic anal rape scene in it. Lol. Lesson learned.

My mother ordered this for my nephew who was 11/12 at the time because she thought it was about dragons and my nephew like dragons.  @-)

And this is why I really think they should have stuck with the original title! Men Who Hate Women is a much better indication of what's inside that book!

  • Books are almost never a safe purchase. Last year, I bought books for my critique partners (who have become close friends and I know them well), and they both ended up reading and hating my choices. lol. The novels were both YAs that you ladies raved about, so I went with your recommendation.

    THANKS A LOT, NBC! ;)

  • Ughh my MIL buys me books because she knows I like to read. She usually justhits the clearance section at the bookstore. Last year she asked for a list of books that I wanted....and didn't buy any of them. This year she asked for a list again. I probably won't get any of them.
  • I don't think anyone have ever given me a book as a gift, except for Mom and my husband. DH bought me the Harry Potter series for our 1st anniversary, but we were so young and poor that I made him take it back so we could pay the electric bill. He has also bought me the hardback boxed set of Calvin & Hobbes books, which I adore and don't let anyone touch.

My mom has only ever gotten me Judy Blume books when I was young, like Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret, which was how she "taught" me about periods and such. Nice, huh?

I much prefer B&N GCs to someone actually attempting to buy me a book, unless they specifically heard me say that I want that particular book.

  • I love getting books but my family knows to get me things I've asked for, my only dilemma this year is I put some series books on my list and I hope I don't get things out of order but that was my mistake.

I do buy people a lot of books for Christmas but I am usually very good at picking out books for people and they ask me to pick out books for them.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people ask for a gift list (anything... not just books) yet NEVER buy off of the list!!!  Don't waste my time if you aren't going to use it!

Yes. My mother gets things for me that are on the bubble of something I might read. Most of the time they're more likely what SHE would like to read. Annoying. They get given away or back to her if they've sat on my shelf for several years. I still feel guilty.

  • I ask for specific books usually and the family knows better than that.  The only one who could get me something that I'd like was my Grandmother and she has since passed.

I'm on the opposite side though as far as giving, a lot of my friends/family ask me to pick them books out for Christmas that they'll like.  I have about a 75% success ratio too which is good considering I get anxiety all the time as to whether they'll like them.

    Yep. Me too!

My Mum buys me books for Christmas all the time but has NO IDEA what my tastes are. I rarely read them and I always feel guilty about it.

  • I go back and forth - some of my favorite books weren't even on my radar until they were gifted to me (admittedly by other readers), but I've received a few duds in my time too (I'm thinking of the year my mother gave me a book called What Is My Cat Thinking? about how to read your cat's mind).

  • I don't really exchange presents with many people anymore so this isn't really a problem for me.  My mother is getting my dog a present but has decided DH and I are too old for presents and we should just focus on DD and my MIL gets really random presents and even though she knows I'm a reader, doesn't get me books.  At least I don't have to feel guilty about not reading books I'm not interested in!

  • I am surrounded by a bunch of non readers so I very rarely buy books for people. My dad reads some, and last year I got him the Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy books by Bill O'Reilly. He loved them.  (Know your audience). But mainly I never buy books for folks and folks never buy books for me. I will, however, if someone is looking for a specific gift idea give them the names of books I might like.

  • I always buy books for people! But I rarely buy them for those I don't know well. If I get a book as a gift from a family member it's always something I would never in a million years select for myself!
