Traveling with a newborn

We're going on a 7 hour road trip next week for the holidays. Any tips (feedings, fussyness, anything) for traveling that long with a newborn?

Re: Traveling with a newborn

  • My friend just did this. She basically said to leave tons of extra time because you have to pull over to feed, change, get them out of the carseat a lot.

  • Ooh, I hope he likes his car seat. I don't really have any road trip tips. If he rides well and you can combine feedings &diaper changes it shouldn't take much more than the 7 hours it normally would. Good luck!

  • Definitely leave right before his normal longest stretch of sleep and plan for extra time.

  • Traveling with a newborn is much easier than an older kid bc they still sleep so much. We did a 4 hr trip when E was about 4 weeks old. I would plan for extra time so you have time to stop feed baby, change diaper, etc. I sat in the back with him and made sure I had supplies I needed with in arms reach. Also if you are breastfeeding then make sure to move the seat belt around so you don't get a clogged duct.

  • Thanks ladies! Fortunately he does like his car seat and it usually puts him right to sleep. I plan on hanging out in the back seat with him.

We are taking our dog so hopefully we can time potty breaks for him with feedings for W.

  • In our long trip I brought a bottle, so we didn't have to pull over as much (only diapers.) I pumped in the car while DH drove.

  • at that age he pretty much always slept in the car, no matter what. we didn't travel quite that long, so i would expect to stop a few times to feed, but i would avoid taking LO out of the car seat if possible (if you're nursing, then probably not possible).
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

So you just fed with the bottle while in the car seat and driving? DH mentioned this but what about burps?

  • We did a 14hr trip when DS was 5 months, and we got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic twice with nowhere to pull over so and I pulled my boob out and fed him in his car seat dangling over him...yeah, that is quite the mommy memory.

I agree with coordinating it with the sleep schedule, and we found having his travel sleep sheep helped because he always slept better and longer with white noise.

And have patience and know that the trip will take the time it takes.  4 hours probably will fly by with one pit stop for a feed and a change, and you will do awesome :)
