Christmas Menus

So what is everyone having for Christmas/Christmas eve dinners this year?

I typically keep Christmas dinner more simple than Thanksgiving.  Ham with sides, or one year I made spaghetti and meatballs.  Kev asked if we could make this soup his grandma taught me to make this year so we will spend most of next monday making little cappelletti (like tortellini but smaller and meat filled).  So that will be our main  course. I am figuring a salad and some homemade bread to go with it. But it will be nice not having to spend all day in the kitchen on Christmas. Maybe I will even make something big for us for breakfast! Like monkey bread... mmmmmmm.

We are hosting Christmas Eve with some of dh's family.

I always do ham because that is what I had growing up. Dh's family always does turkey so they think I'm weird. So we compromise. I make a small ham and dh fries a small turkey. Will also have basics: mashed potatoes, corn, rolls and salad. Buffalo chicken dip for appetizer

Dh's grandmother is bringing pies but I'm not a huge pie fan so I'm making a copycat recipe of the cheesecake factory's raspberry white chocolate cheesecake. I made it a while ago and it's fabulous

Christmas will just be the 3 of us. Dh grew up with cinnamon buns and big bruch and then lasagna for dinner. We've done that the years we've been home so will do it again.

  • Christmas is the one holiday that I host, I look forward to it every year!  Although we keep the menu fairly simple.  we eat around 4 and no one gets fed lunch that day unless they want to cook for themselves, so I just set out cheese & crackers, buffalo chicken dip and Christmas cookies in the afternoon.  Actual dinner is:

Turkey, ham,  mashed potatoes (sometimes I do a make ahead casserole, sometimes I do it that day, haven't decided for this year), rolls, 2 veggies, and stuffing.  Not sure about dessert, my mom is usually in charge of bringing that.

  • I host Christmas Eve at my house.  I am making ham, holiday potatoes (it's hash browns and cheese and extremely fattening and delicious!), brussels sprouts (a new recipe), crescent rolls, noodles.   Noah also wants to make artichoke dip, so I guess we'll have that and shrimp cocktail as an appetizer.  I just do Christmas cookies for dessert.
  • Amber-do you have the recipe for that hash browns thing?  I've had that before at a potluck lunch and it was delicious, maybe I'll try something new this year!

  • Emmy, the one we always made included the following (and is among my favorite foods)
Bag of frozen hashbrowns (either cubes or shredded)
can of cream of something soup (I like chicken)
    16oz sour cream
    2 cups/8oz shredded cheddar cheese
    1/4 c melted butter
    1/4 c chopped onion
    salt and pepper
mix that all together, put in a 9x13 baking pan
2c crushed corn flakes mixed with 1/4c melted butter
    put that on top

350 for 45 min or until hot and bubbly. Yum
  • Rather than working, trying to figure out a menu is what I've been doing the last 10 minutes.

I don't want to repeat thanksgiving with sides (with the exception of corn casserole).

    Ham is our main dish.

I think I'm going to mix things up and make this roasted butternut squash salad.

I'm blanking on a green vegetable. Suggestions are welcome. Brussels sprouts are my go-to, but I think I want something different.

I did mac n cheese for thanksgiving, so I think I'm going to do a cheesy potato as a side.

  • Emmy, my recipe is at home.  It's similar to Amanda's.  Although I use crushed potato chips on top instead of corn flakes.
  • Thank you guys, that looks great and easy to make!

  • What a timely post! I was just stressing about this. We do it up pretty big and after 7 years of this I JUST realized I should be making a document I can refer to yearly with quantities, shopping lists, recipes, etc. so that will be great for next year. This year I'll be stressing a little.

We always do turkey and this year Tim got his hands on a deep fryer. By popular vote that's what we're doing this year. Otherwise it's grandma's stuffing, mashed potatoes, some sort of veggie... We're working on the full menu on the drive home from work today. :)

  • We'll be at MIL's for Christmas Eve and DH's cousins house for Christmas dinner. I need to plan Christmas breakfast, a few meals for while my family is here and have enough food in the house that DH doesn't eat out constantly with the kids on the days I work...

We'll be having Christmas with my aunt, uncle and parents on the 22nd. That night we'll have Chicken and Noodles with mashed potatoes. Still need to plan a couple of sides.

Christmas morning with be breakfast casserole, coffee cake and fruit salad.

  • I agree.... so glad you gals posted this.... All weekend I was looking over my menus and cookbooks deciding what to do. We host and do sit down with ham but trying to change a few things up this year. So far I am thinking ham (although DH has this crazy idea of buying a smoker for himself and doing prime rib. Sounds like a lot to depned on for first time using- ugh. I really don't even like prime rib.) normally I do this shreddedpotato dish from pinterest, http://www.pinterest.com/pin/104427285079250985/ but DH requesting just baked red skin potato wedges. Ok then. green bean casserole since SIL didn't do for thanksgiving, sausage stuffing, and normally I do a seafood lasgana or lobster mac n cheese, but thinking of making just a classic lasagna instead. Rolls. And I always have way too many desserts that everyone is too full to eat. So having cookies and maybe a pie. That is it. I've made this yummy crock pot chocolate cake and again no one eats. Ha.

I need to do this!! Every year we wonder how much to make of certain things. Then I feel like we have too much! Last year we definitely had lots of extras. But I didn't write down how much we got of items so now I don't know how much to get this year. This year I need to write it down!

  • Sarah---the list making/quantities/etc...is so helpful!!  I don't do it for Christmas, but I do it every year for the luau, then I put the list on top of the box that we keep all of the decorations in.  I write down how many people we had, what I made & how much of it, and how much beer and liquor we went through.  So much better than trying to remember/guess a year later!!

  • It will just be my little family, and I have no idea yet what to make. Typically my Mom makes a beautiful prime rib dinner; I'm just not sure if we'll splurge and attempt it ourselved, or pickup some filet mignon instead. And maybe some shrimp - a little surf and turf!

    My three sons!

  • We eat at my parents' on Christmas Eve. My mom does a huge buffet. We have honeybaked ham, standing rib roast, sandwich fixings, veggies, fruit, gourmet potatoes from T-Bones (they are similar to what Amber described but they make them and you just have to throw it in the oven), shrimp, nutbread, cookies.

We have dinner at DH's grandmother's and that is ham, turkey, stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, stuffing, paska bread.

I take dessert to both. I am not sure what I am bringing yet.

  • We invited ourselves to my brother's for dinner. This year is Christmas with the in-laws (ours declined to come, heh), so his wife's family will be there, and her mom has serious grandbaby rabies, so we're trading visiting time with DS for Christmas dinner. I know she's making stuffed shells, so we'll make some kind of salad and some pies for dessert.

We are hosting and I'm doing prime rib & crab legs for the non meat eaters like myself.  Also a ham.  Sisters will do the sides - potatoes, spinach casserole, onions etc..,  Traditional.
