hypothetically...

how long after stopping BCP, and not testing positive for pregnancy, should I wait before calling a doctor due to a missed period? Cause um, as nice as it is, it is kinda annoying in its own way.

Re: hypothetically...

  • Hypothetically speaking, how long has it been?

  • like 77 days since my last pill.  and I had like a withdrawl bleeding type period after that for a few days. But since then. Nothing. Hypothetically.
  • I would say that 77 days is long enough of a wait to call the office.  That's a couple of cycles.  Hypothetically, of course.
  • i am sure scheduling an appointment with the doctor will be a sure fire way to end the wait. which is probably why I am reluctant to call.
  • I agree with Amber, I would call.

  • Hypothetically speaking, were your periods regular prior to going on BCP?  Mine have always been irregular and 77 days wouldn't be too unusual for me.

Also how many pregnancy tests have you done, and how far apart.  With DD I was convinced that I was pregnant even though the tests came out negative.  I didn't get a positive test until  10 days after I took the first one.

  • It may take "you" up to 3 months to get a period after stopping BCP, so "you" might be okay waiting a little bit longer, but if it were "me", "I" would call.  All hypothetical, of course.

    I agree with this.

  • Thanks ladies. the first time I quit BCP I was "regular" in a 28 day cycle. Then I had my merania out and my body was weird, very very  weird. So I went on BCP again.  I was hoping to have fallen back into a normalish mode. But so much for that.  I have tested 4 times so far over the course of the past 40 days. I keep telling myself one more test or one more week then I will call.  hahaha.

Yeah I would probably wait 3 months and see. Although I guess it depended on why I was off bcp. If I wanted to get pg I'd be more inclined to call sooner or if we had been trying and I wasn't believing the tests were really negative. But if I was going off just to go off I wouldn't really worry about it. I have really long irregular cycles off bcp so I am kind of laid back on that though!

  • Call your doc and ask ask the office manager or nurse for a script for a blood draw for potential pregnancy. Then just go to the lab you would normally go to and have the blood drawn. Your doc office should call you next day, I would think. At least this is what I did with all 3 of my non-hypothetical pregnancies.

    Good luck!

    that sounds terrifying. :P

also... doctors line is messed up or something.  message telling me their normal hours and emergency number followed by an ear piercing long beep and my phone disconnecting. Guess I get to wait a little longer.
  • I think with Mirena it can take up to 12 weeks for the hormones to get out of your body, so while I wouldn't freak out, I would definitely call the doc and at least see what they think. People respond to the drugs differently, so you might just be one that takes a while for things to go back to normal!
  • Thanks for all of the replies last week ladies. I hadn't been able to get ahold of my doctor on Friday, but retested (cause I love peeing on stuff) and still negative. I think I am going to give it a few more days and then call the doctor to figure out what is wrong with me
    ;)

aside from all this weirdness though I am really loving being off of BC.  I swear I have been on it or pregnant for about half of my life now. I think I am just over it.
  • It is very freeing to not have to take and worry about BC!    I'm telling you, vasectomies are where it's at!   ;)

yes, that will be our next BC method implemented.  Cause it's his turn.

Can I just tell you what babies men can be....... my hubby is going to hold out to see if I need a c-section just incase they can just tie my tubes vs him snip snipping. ha.
  • Caron, that was our deal.  IF I needed a c-section I was going to have my tubes tied, since they're in there already.   I didn't, so it was his turn.   Brody was over 2 years old when he finally scheduled it.   ;)
  • Brian is being a big baby about it too, I need to just pick a deadline eventually and stick with it.  Vasectomy or abstinence, those will be the choices.

  • I'm glad to hear mine isn't the only one being a baby about the big V! We had the same deal - c for me meant tube tying, if not, it was him. Since we're leaning toward being one and done, we've talked about this a bit recently and he is convinced he gets general anesthesia and like a week in the hospital:P
  • And again ladies.... this is why we have the babies..... if not the world's population would be at least half!!!
  • Well, I'm the meanie in the group because I will need another c-section when the time comes, but DH will still be getting the big V!
  • Add me to the wimpy husband club.  Every time I bring up a vasectomy he turns into a mumbling mess.   But he doesn't want any more kids.  ~X(   We've been using condoms for a year now and I'm just over it, but I don't want to go back on bc.

  • The direction this convo turned is making me laugh. Since #2 was a c and #3 was scheduled to be one as well, I had all of the tube tying papers signed and ready.

Then Sean came 8 days early, within 90 minutes of my first contraction. It was probably 36 hours later when I remembered I had wanted the procedure done!

So abstinence is working quiet well - for me at least! ;)

  • Amanda - funny you posted this b/c for some reason (probably after reading a post last week & meeting moms with kids 4-5 yrs apart) I thought hmmm, I wonder if she will have more kids?  I recall you saying you would wait until EJ went to kindergarten.  Strange you posted this around the same time. Not that it means anything. Hypothetically of course
