Confessions with a Colleague

So Friday we had our office holiday party. After 3 years here (and thanks to one friend who left the company earlier this year after having her first LO), I finally have a few "work" friends, so I naturally hung out with these ladies on Friday, especially during the after party at a local brewing company.

I've known one of them had started trying to get pregnant, and (thanks to several drinks loosening my tongue and my reserve) we got to talking. She and her husband just hit the year mark. She confessed to undergoing all the testing, and they just did their first round of IUI about a week ago. I told her about my m/c, and that it had taken almost a year and a half just to get that first positive test.

I kind of feel better knowing there's someone IRL going through this stuff with me. I know one other close friend who had a m/c between her first and second LOs, but she's never had any TTTC (I think out of her 3 boys, technically only 1 was really "planned"). I think I might ask her for a recommendation to her RE and more info. She said because she had the IUI done in his office, all she paid was the specialist copay, even though our insurance technically offers no IF coverage (I'm curious if it'd really be covered, or if she just hasn't gotten the bill yet?)

No real point to this. It just felt good (on some level, crappy as it is for us both to be going through this shit) to connect to someone IRL who "gets it."

Re: Confessions with a Colleague

  • I'm glad you had someone to talk to IRL about everything.
  • It's nice to have someone to talk to IRL. Glad that conversation happened and that you can be there for each other.

  • Even though it sucks to have to talk to anyone about this (because it just sucks in general), I'm so glad you have someone IRL who you can talk to. I know that when I found a good friend was struggling too, it really helped both of us to have someone who understood. We have spent hours talking, crying, venting, and laughing about the awkwardness that is IF with each other. I hope you can continue to be a support for each other! <3

  • I just e-mailed her, so we'll see! She lives in the city, but she's about a half hour walk from our office building. Hopefully the RE she's going to isn't too much of a walk/quick ride from work, since I don't have a car when I go to work!

  • It was so much easier for me to open up after hitting the 2 year mark and after my MC. I have tried to be more open about TTTC and MCs and really feel like I've been able to help others feel more normal.

It is just so nice knowing you're not alone.

  • Oh her response was soooo helpful!!

She had nothing but good things to say about the clinic she's using, and it's only about a 20-minute walk from our office building. I'm checking out their site now, and once I talk to DH about pursuing further testing, I'll probably give them a call to set up a consultation and see how I feel about things in person.

I feel so much better about using a service myself when I know someone else has used it and is happy with it. I hate trying to find things like Dr.'s offices on my own.

  • I'm so glad you found someone IRL.  I remember being sort of relieved to find someone who was going through a similar experience.  I think it was because there was finally someone (besides H) that I wouldn't have to explain my feelings to, or explain that it's been over a year, and with charting/temping, I can say it's probably not 'just bad timing.'

It really helped, and continues to.  I hope you find the same!

But yeah, it's comforting to have someone to physically talk with. There's just something about being able to sit down across from someone and look them in the face and have that physical connection in the conversation.

  • I'm glad that you found another person to talk to. I consider 3Ters/IFers part of a secret tribe. When I connect with a fellow 3Ter I instantly develop a kinship with them.

I had a similar experience with a colleague a couple of weeks ago and it was eye opening in a positive way.

  • Honestly it's just nice to be able to talk with someone. Without holding back. I'm fortunate (In a kind of sick way) that two of my regular friends were tttc long before I was ttc at all so I benefited immensely from their knowledge. You ladies are always wonderful, but yes, nice that you cantalk and share with her. I'd def get the info from her even if you don't end up utilizing it.
